Hey, elbows, there’s plenty of beaches to be combed. Nobody said that that there couldn’t be more than one of us out there. So go for it! Who knows, perhaps one day we might meet on some sandy strand.
I watch a lot of TV, mainly half hour sitcoms with just a couple of dramas mixed in. I’m quite the completest - most of the shows I’ve watched, I’ve seen every episode and do so for all new shows.
I like to read reviews but I’m not sure if I could review shows in such detail, at least as much as they do on The AV Club, since I watch so many each week. A lot of times those detailed reviews bore me anyway. I would really like to write a week-in-TV-shows-I-watch roundup! And/or recommend new shows to people.
I also never miss an Indians game (baseball) and have spent a few years blogging every game. It’s fun but it’s tedious (it takes 3 hours to listen to a game then 1-2 hours to write about it and make graphics) but I would enjoy it more if I got paid!
I work for a national not for profit and we do have a professional archivist / historian on staff. This is not a common job, but it does exist, and someone somewhere must be looking for a new one.
Me, I like to watch movies and read and play video games and make jewelry. All of those can be translated into a job but I’d rather just do my 9 to 5 one I have now.
But there are certain creative things I don’t have time for. One of them was running role-playing games (you know, D&D-style, though rarely D&D itself in my case) as the gamemaster (dungeon master, if you must).
Most people only want to be a player, and gamemasters are usually in short supply. While I treasure my rare chances to be a player, I’m actually very happy in the role of GM, and have received a great deal of praise for how I run things. I’ve worked with all kinds of groups, too, from preschool kids, all the way up to adults in their 30’s.
Back in my high school and college days there were event certain holiday weekends during school breaks where I actually did put in more than 40 hours a week as a GM. So I know that I could handle a full-time workload if I needed to. Long-term, though, I think it would lose it’s charm if I spent more than 20 hours a week on it.
I hope I am on the verge of making money from my hobby. I love playing poker and have qualified (by playing 2 satellite tournaments) to play in the Aussie Millions main event! The first prize is $1.6 million. If I win more then $30K, I will use some of it to bankroll playing regularly and see if i can make it my second “job”. Late last year I started a new job as a swimming teacher, I get pain dismally but love it so much that I’d do it for free if i could afford to.
The other dreams would be as a fellow beach comber and also a researcher for a novelist.
