Anything’s fair game. Newspapers, TV, even (gasp!) tabloids. What do you rely on and what do you avoid like the plague?
Best: NY Times
Worst: Fox News
Best: NPR, NY Times
Worst: Fox News
Best: The Straight Dope
Worst: My mother’s gossip
UK:
Best: BBC News (“required by its charter to be free from both political and commercial influence”), Guardian (left wing), Telegraph (right wing), Times (centre-right)
Worst: The Daily Express (right-wing tabloid obsessed with Madeleine McCann and Diana), The Daily Mail (very right wing tabloid obsessed with cancer, Gypsies, Muslims, immigrants and house prices)
Note: a “tabloid” in the UK merely refers to the newspaper size. A “red top” is a low-class tabloid, but is still a newspaper, and is still theoretically held to certain journalistic standards, but will skirt around the edges and tweak those standards as much as they possibly can. They don’t as a rule just make shit up, though it has been known to happen, and they certainly exaggerate and put words in people’s mouths all the time.
