What do you think of AT&T internet and TV service?

We’ve recently had some interruption of service on our internet with Comcast, and the best they could do was schedule a tech out on Sunday, after reporting the problem on Tuesday. This does not seem reasonable, and we’re considering a change in providers, seeing as how we received a flyer in the mail today!

Does anyone have experience with them? How are they when there is a problem? And are they even cable? The flyer mentions “cable doesn’t give you all this.”

What is AT&T U-verse?

I realize I could go to the website, and I have (at least, my husband has.) I would just like some real life opinions.

Thanks!

We just got ATT within the last week and have our TV, phone and internet through them. They had some kind of wicked deal where the whole package is $49 a month for the next 6 months because they are trying to pick up subscribers in our area.

So far, in the whole week, we’ve been happy. My husband is pleased with the speed of our connection as am I - it is fiber and not DSL I guess and so is faster than what we had before.

In terms of the TV service it is really really cool. We have the DVR and we can access our DVR from a web interface - so basically I can set my DVR to record stuff when I’m sitting at my computer at work. That is so neat. However I don’t totally love the interface because when surfing the live Guide it doesn’t show you the network logo on each line, just the call letters so you have to pay attention to which channel you are highlighting. I’m a lazy surfer I guess.

Also we have a couple of little kids and they have this “On Demand” thing with a whole bunch - like several hundreds - of kids shows, and even from networks we don’t get like Sprout. They are just sitting there free, and you can watch them any time. Also very neat. (they have all kinds of shows, sports, comedy and so on but kids shows is all we have used it for really)

I’m not sure what part of it all is the “U-verse” bit exactly but I know it is part of our package.

Oh and the tech who installed was on time and friendly and knowledgeable.

Hope that helps.

Internet: Customer Service is very friendly, and has improved dramatically over past experiences.

Our connection is slow (apartment building), especially on the weekends, but AT&T alternately insists that this is our imagination or a problem with our equipment, rather than admitting the reality that with the number of users in our building there is no way to get us the bandwidth we’re paying for without laying new cable. But they’re very friendly about it.

Is there some secret phone number to call to find out about the rollout schedule? The people at the AT&T store 2 miles from my house swear Uverse is available in my city, just not at my hosuse yet. The website confirms this. I just want to know how lomg I will have to wait.

I have AT&T DSL (used to be Yahoo), and have been very pleased. I have to cycle power on my modem every couple of months, but not a big deal. Install was very easy (DIY), and connect speeds are very good. I have been told that your actual connect speeds vary depending on distance to the “hub”. So YMMV.

I would doubt that they installed fiber from your house to the junction. So technically it is DSL (over your normal phone - copper - wire) to their “hub”. From there it is likely fiber to the rest of their network. But technically I suspect it is actually DSL.

I have AT&T DSL and am disappointed with the speeds I was getting, especially compared to what I used to be getting with Time Warner DSL. It’s passable for my purposes, but only just.

If you can find someone near you who has it, run SpeedTest to get a sense of the speeds you can expect.

Man I wish I had a choice…

All I’ve got is Time Warner, and they are the ONLY gig in my neighborhood. I can’t even get Verizon DSL, forget about FiOS.

It is nice to see that ATT is doing something similar to FiOS though.
