It’s called the Alpha Dorado by Buck knives. I wanted an American made knife with superior durability and ability to hold an edge. It’s made with 420HC Steel (Bucks own steel I believe) and the weight is spot on match. Meaning it’s a heavy knife. I like to feel a knife when using it… my feather weight Gerber is just that, a light articulate knife, used when going out for the evening… not for treking in the woods.
What do you guys value in a carrying knife? Examples…
That’s not a knife, this is a knife.
Actually, this is the knife I take outdoors, the sheath stinks, I had to make my own. I’ve used it to cut rope, chop brush, flip pancakes and target throw. It’s heavy but has a good feel to it. I almost feel I could kill me a 'bar with it. I bought it in 1988 during a moment of whimsey but I’ve grown quite fond of it.
Your knife looks cool, what do you use it for?
I was amused at your phrase "a light articulate knife, used when going out for the evening… " I wanna party with you, cowboy.
When I was a boy, a friend of my father bought me this Swiss Army knife (or one just like it) for my birthday. I’ve had it almost thirty years now, and it’s been the best (i.e. most useful) knife I’ve ever owned.
I had a small Gerber single-blade knife that was very small (1 ¼ inch blade) that was very sharp and easy to tote, but it’s usefulness was limited by it’s size.
But - My all-time favorite knife is my Classic Folding Hunter by Buck. It’s crude and heavy, and not terribly practical, but I’ve owned one since I was a lad. I carry it in my car in the built-in sunglass storage place
Cool looking knife.
I value edge-retention and a good, strong locking mechanism in a folding knife. Until recently, I carried a large Chris Reeve Sebenza. It’s beautifully made and has an outstanding frame-lock. It’s also frighteningly sharp and keeps that edge through much hard cutting. A very satisfactory piece all around, I must say, and worth every penny of the admittedly steep price.
More recently, I’ve started carrying one of these AG Russell Yellow Delrin Folding Hunters. I wanted something a little more old-fashioned than the Sebenza. The Russell knife is also nicely made, though not up to quite the same standard as the somewhat pricey Sebenza. I’m very satisfied with its edge retention and blade geometry. Also, since its lines very closely follow those of the Remington Bullet knives of the 20’s and 30’s, it satisfied my desire for something with the look of a “classic” pocketknife.
As far as fixed blades go, if I could keep only one it would be my full-size Randall #14 that I bought directly from Randall back in the late 80’s. I opted for the forged carbon steel blade over the stainless. It’s a fantastic knife. Sharp, tough, and with a wonderful feel in the hand. I’ve never used mine to actually attack anyone, though it is sometimes called the “Attack” model; it has performed flawlessly as a general purpose field and hunting knife, though.
420HC is a pretty basic steel. Buck is supposed to have a good heat treat on their non-import stuff though. I actually like a ‘softer’ steel (up to a point) for sharpening ease.
I’m a big fan of Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. I carry an aluminum handled Farmer model with the key ring attatchment filed off currently and a Rambler model on my keychain. I like the other tools combined with a good knife blade. I use the awl and large screwdriver alot on the larger knife and the scissors quite a bit on the smaller. And the bottle opener on the Rambler works great too.
Ditto. I’d never thought of a knife as an accessory to evening wear, though come to think of it, my DH’s dress white uniform did feature a big-ass sword.
I’ve got a small Swiss army knife and a Leatherman tool I carry around with me, but I’m a girl, so I have no need to feel manly.
I carry a Schrade 152 Sharpfinger on a daily basis but prefer a Buck 120 on special occasions.
I just got a Long’s Peak from Columbia River Knife and Tool as a gift. I use it on my farm all the time. It’s got a great locking mechanism and you can open it with one hand, which is is handier than I thought it would be.
And, ah, to respond to the OP, that’s one cool knife you’ve got.
Does anyone have a recomendation for a replacement to the now no longer made Benchmade 806D2 ?
I really like the OP’s knife. I can’t see most of the others because I’m blocked at work.
I do have a question… what does this mean?:
I go out in the evenings. I go out in the days. I’ve never found a reason to carry a knife of any kind. I have a nice sharp Gerber that I bought because I liked the feel and look of it. I’ve yet to find a reason to use it. Mostly it sits in the zipper pocket of my backpack which I bring along when I picnic with the kids at a local state park. I’m sure when an occasion arises, I’ll forget that I even have it.
This place still carries them. A Froogle search showed several other vendors with them in stock as well. Buy one (or two) from existing stock and then worry about a replacement when you wear it out or lose it.
Well I live a varied lifestyle I guess. I like doing a lot of grunt work around the house and in the woods… My wife and I are always making something or another out back… and a strong worthy knife is what I like for that…
But for some reason, I have always carried a pocket knife… Those who know me know I always have several things in my pocket at all times, and one of them is a pocket knife. Perhaps it’s my inner Grissly Adams peeking out, or perhaps it’s the years of boytscouts 20 years ago that was burned into my id. I dunno.
As for the evening knife, it is what it is… Smallish, light, sharp, and non-invasive. The one in my OP is strictly for outdoor use because of it’s size and weight…
Oh and I have a crocodile dundee knife as well, but thats reserved for when I’m feeling those less-than-masculine days and I need a boost… LOL
Is that a place you’ve done buisness with before? Though I was more wondering what the new-improved replacement will be. I have an original, but was lucky to get it, since several online stores that offer them turn out to have no actual stock of them and of courxe can’t get new stock.
Also what do people think about the Kershaw Leek knives, especially the S30 steel version?
The Leeks that I’ve examined, originally with intent to purchase, did not impress me with their fit and finish even for something in their moderate price range. I passed on buying. Actually, I haven’t been been overwhelmed by any of the assisted-opening knives I’ve seen from any manufacturer. It strikes me as little more than a sales gimmick. None of them have had a blade shape I liked. None of them had handle shapes I found to my taste.
Ditto. It seems to me that it’s when I’m out and about that I really need to have a decent pocket knife. Something always comes up that can be fixed, opened, shaved, whatever with my Gerber. A Bowie usually clashes with my outfit.
Dude, a California Bowie is the perfect accessory for any outfit. If it clashes with your outfit, you need to dress better.
Tres kewl. I can wear it on the left hip to off-set the cell phone on the right hip. I wonder if I can get the wife to get it for me for Bastille Day?
This is the one I carry, all the time. I have a Gerber Suspension Multi-tool on most work days, and if I’m dressing heavy, no matter what time of day or night, This is tucked handily into my boot, or lashed to my calf.
Barring air travel, I am never without a knife or two, and if there’s a knife, it’s usually an automatic. I must have a hundred knives and swords, some are just the cheap Asian autos, some, like the ones i currently have, are better quality, hold an edge longer, and can take the abuse I dish out.
OP: Nice piece.
