What do you think of women who shave their heads?

I often shave my head, and I’m not going bald. I think I look better with a shaved head, but my hair grows so quickly and so thinkly that it’s too much trouble to do all the time. I wouldn’t much mind going bald, in fact; I prefer the look and it would save me energy

My first thought when I read this thread was, "they’re either some hipster weirdoes, or some poor ladies doing chemotherapy. I’d have all the patience in the world for the latter who do it, and none for the former who do. Of course, I wear sweatpants a lot, so what the hell do I know about fashion?

I think unless you have cancer, are showing solidarity with someone you know who has cancer, joining the Navy SEALS, planning on becoming some sort of urban terrorist/freedom fighter, fighting space aliens, predicting future crimes, working in a vintage record store or a are a 90s alt rock singer, it’s a terrible idea for most women.

I don’t like it on either men or women, especially pasty young white men with those shiny domes. If you need to make a statement, how about just doing your job right and being a good citizen; it would be a refreshing change.

Yeah, there are circumstances where the shaved head is the card you’re dealt, in which case you shave your head and move on because that’s what you’ve gotta do sometimes.

It’s just gonna be how you look, because that’s the way you roll. But it’s not going to make you look BETTER.

Or them.

I’ve seen people express outrage at women with pixie cuts (accusing them of wanting to look like men, going on about how horny they could make men if only they got extensions), so shaving one’s head is still a pretty big deal for women. A little sad that a woman doing anything unfeminine or unattractive is a gutsy move, but I guess it is.

It does seem to be less of a big deal for black women (broad generalization: I think white women are more prone to looking like cancer patients). Then again, remember how people made a big deal when Beyoncé’s sister shaved her head?

I think most women look better with long hair yet I’m obviously okay with people doing whatever they want with their own hair. I’m not crazy about bald men either, by the way. Good hair simply improves your appearance.

Bald women have to have a really beautiful face and head shape in order to pull it off. Someone mentioned Natalie Portman, which is a good example.

I’m having a Hollywood brainstorm!

Sinead O’Connor as the lead in a movie: The Young Mussolini!

I love women with shaved heads. But then, I’m punk as fuck.

Do you like the look, the attitude it represents, or both?

I’m firmly in the “looks ridiculous” camp. And that goes for men too. Of course if there’s a legitimate reason like chemo it’s understandable. Must remember tho, this is comong from a guy that wore an 18-inch ponytail until age 50…some folks thought that was ridiculous too.

I shaved my head for about a year when I was 18. I kept a chunk of hair on one side in the front that hung to my chin. here’s the easiest pic I can find

I like the look. If the look comes with the attitude, that’s even better.

On a very attractive, feminine woman with a nicely shaped skull I think it is sexy as hell.

Unattractive or less feminine women…not a good idea.

I would agree that everybody should feel free to do as they wish with thier hair.

I shave my head at times and appreciate that it just feels cool, the hell with whether it looks “good” or not.

I really don’t care. It beats short “Mom hair”, absolutely, and I think it looks stunning on thinner black women.

Around these parts, I tend to see the most shaved heads on middle-aged, rotund earthy/hippie/womyn types.

After about 15 years of shoulder-length hair, I’ve reverted to my super-short college 'do. It’s easy to take care of (I’m a klutz when it comes to creating hairstyles) and people tell me it looks good on me. I tend to go even shorter in the summer. I just got a cut this weekend, and my longest hair (on top) is about an inch and a half long. About half an inch on the sides and back.

I agree with the idea that not every woman looks great with a shaved head, but it takes some moxie to go for it. Even with my buzz, I’m not sure I’d voluntarily “go all the way.”

Several years ago, one of my beading catalogs featured an employee who was going through chemo and had decorated her bald head with an elaborate pattern of stick-on bindis. It looked fabulous.

Brave in the ‘doing something that you want to do, dispite the fact that some people are going to give you crap about it’ sense, not the ‘saved a small child from a pack of wild dogs’ sense. The latter is a bit much to expect from a hairstyle.

Course, how much crap you’re likely to take is pretty location dependent. A 19 year old Smith College student isn’t really taking much of a risk, but so what? Without the risk, it’s just another haircut. The more socially acceptable standards of beauty there are, the more people get to feel beautiful. And the more visually interesting people as a group become.

This is, as far as I’m concerned, a pretty good thing.

Opal, is 18 y/o you still single? And does she date recently unemployed guys twice her age?

Like most polls this one is badly broken.

Firstly, it comprises a series of specific options that are by no means complete. Probably unintentionally, it encourages people into categories into which they don’t precisely fit, resulting in skewed results.

Secondly, it is highly biased towards the positive, since it provides a reasonable range of positive options, one neutral, and two extreme negatives (“never be done” and “ridiculous”) that many are going to be reluctant to choose.

Thirdly, there is no balance. The postive and negative options are (at least in significant part) not even asking about the same thing. The positive options are mostly subjective statements about the answerers’ subjective feelings about how the shaved person looks to them, while the negative options are (or are close to being) highly judgmental statements about the shaved person’s behaviour.

The poll says far more about the pollster’s views than the answerers’.

FTR, I don’t find a shaven head attractive on a female. I don’t think it’s ridiculous, or that it “should never be done”.

Really, we need a sticky at the top of IMHO about the very basics of writing a good poll.

My opinion is that I don’t care. Really.

I also live in an area with lots of black ladies who keep their hair extremely short. A shaved-head lady wouldn’t catch my eye due to all of the almost-shaved-head ladies around.

I didn’t vote in the poll either. N/A
