Bangkok actually does not have Western-style strip joints. Not counting the live, all-nude lesbian sex shows, there are go-go bars where the girls dance in groups naked or semi-naked. That probably sounds like in the West, but trust me, you’d know the difference if you saw it. Tipping on stage is rare. Unlike in the West, where touching the girls is frowned upon, the girls will generally all go back to their customers after their dance set, and good luck not getting them to touch you! Certain places will even give you “special service” at your seat. You usually tip the one(s) who’s been sitting with you. Could be anywhere from 20-100 baht. There are notes in denominations of 20, 50 and 100 baht; in US money, that’s 66 cents, $1.65 and $3.30. Never more; I’ve seen many a newbie try to impress the girls with throwing a large wad at them, only to hear them discuss among themselves in Thai how maybe he’s a candidate for being taken to the cleaners. Sometimes if a guy has to leave while his girl is on the stage, then he’ll slip something into whatever she’s still wearing, if she’s wearing anything.
Here in Mexico, the strip clubs (the ones I’ve been dragged to) are very definitely different than in the States.
In the States (in my experience), the one dollar bill is common for the dancers on stage. If you’re more spendy than I am, then a five dollar bill will suffice. Actual table/lap dancers, though, have a set fee, as do the private dances.
In Mexico, there’s not even a pretense of a show. A girl picks you, you buy her ten dollar drinks, and she sits with you and runs against you. For sixty dollars and up, you go to a private room, and then whatever happens, happens.
Note that this is for a titty bar, not a strip club. Like most things in Japan, there’s no tipping. You pay your entrance fee, which normally includes all you can drink, and the girls sit around and talk to you. Then once or twice an hour the music changes and lights flash, and all the girls open their shirts. One girl at a time sits on your lap (facing you), and after 15 seconds or so, gets off and a new one gets on.
Then they all button up and the place goes back to being a regular hostess bar. Cheaper than a hostess bar, in fact.
Or so I’ve heard :). Maybe it’s different at the “higher-class” places?
Canada doesn’t have a $1 bill, but Canadian Tire does…
Yep, for historical reasons some privately owned Scottish banks still have the right to issue sterling banknotes (which you might have some trouble spending in England, whereas Bank of England notes are accepted throughout the UK). RBS still has the one pound denomination.
Under these situations, I usually resort to the old standby for tips. I provide the exotic dancer with either stock or cooking tips.
At the risk of posting in a thread likely to be closed in the very near future:
As previously mentioned, Canada has $1 and $2 coins, not paper bills. The strippers there generally end their set with a ‘game time’ where they invite the front row patrons to throw coins - either to knock prizes off of their tits, or into posters that are funneled to their crotch. In between strippers, one of the bar staff usually come along with a broom and sweep all the coins up to give to the stripper -although I’ve seen a few strippers with fancy magnet-on-string apparatuses to collect the coins themselves.
I don’t think this would work in the US. Misogynists would whip quarters , aiming for the eyes.
Chicken, or beef?
To answer the O.P. I stuff an IOU into her g string.
Ah yes. If it’s the same place I’m thinking of, don’t forget that during ‘Showtime’ as it’s called, the manager-ish dude gets on a megaphone and starts shouting a song that goes something along the line of “Boobies! Boobies! Gotta touch them Boobies! Boobies! Boobies! Everyone loves boobies!” Fun times.
Now that places the whole Western world = individualism, Asia = community and collective thinking stereotype upside down.
I usually take advantage of the situation to get rid of all my loose change. You dont know what those girls would do for 50 cents.
It’s been a long time since I went to a strip club (I’m in the US) but one upscale place I went to gave all your change in $2 bills ($2 bills are rare here).
I have heard of clubs that let you buy ‘bills’ (with a credit card) to tip the girls with, of course the house takes a cut of the cost. They are intended to get money from guys who run out of cash but I could see this system being used in place without a single.
I think they do that in most of the clubs.
Man that was totally different from my experience in Tokyo. I would have liked to experience a real Japanese club. We went to Seventh Heaven in Roppongi and it was pretty much like the clubs here in the US. Girls on stage would take tips of 1000 yen (about $10 at the time) but like someone said upthread it was more “special”. I asked about the coin thing and they told me you shouldn’t do it. In the time I was there I didn’t see anyone throw coins on the stage either.
So at least in my experience, you tip using the smallest paper denomination.
According to Umberto Eco, a beef heart wrapped in cloth is customary.
If you wanted to experience something Japanese, going to Roppongi was your first mistake
The one and only time I went to a Strip joint was back in '83 in Soho, (London not NY), on a very quiet Sunday afternoon.
Myself and a friend waited about an hour for the ‘entertainment’ to turn up only to be told there was only one stripper for the whole of Soho and she’d get to us eventually. We left.
There’s probably a moral to the story there but it was a long time ago!

Yeah if I ever go back I’m going to hire some kind of Japanese guide to take me around and experience real Japan.
