I wonder about using lip balm all the time, since I’ve read that waxy stuff actually drys your lips out. I know lots of people who have to use it all the time, and I wonder if it’s a vicious cycle.
If I have dry lips (chapped in the winter, usually, or as noted above in Vegas) I just put actual skin moisturizer on my lips, made with water, not wax. It soaks in, and as my lips dry out, I put more on. I scrub off any little white skin flakes, and repeat as needed.
My lips usually heal well, and I don’t need any lip balm.
It’s awesome, the tub lasts forever, works on dry hands and heels, cuts, scrapes, etc. One product, tons of applications is all the better in my opinion.
I haven’t used it for this purpose myself (I’ve been a Chapstick addict since grade school), but I bet some Lansinoh or other nursing-mama nipple cream would work. We put it on chapped noses now that my nursing days are done, and it’s great. Stays on forever. You can get little sample tubes at baby stores.
A+D Ointment. It’s marketed for diaper rash, but it is fantastic for all kinds of skin irritation.
When my lips get really chapped, like when I’ve spent lots of time outdoors in the winter, I put some on my lips before bed. The next morning, my lips are good as new and I can proceed with my normal life - which usually includes remembering to put on chapstik when I’m in the wind! On those rare occasions my lips have been dry to the point of peeling, two nights in a row of A+D solves the problem. Not sure I’d want to wear it during the day, though, since it smells strongly of petroleum jelly.
Yup, that’s what I came in to say. Lanolin is the shit for chapped lips, because not only is it emollient and a moisture barrier, it stays put like petrolatum or wax based products can only dream of.
Protip: after using your finger to apply lanolin, put some hand lotion on and work the lanolin in with it. If you try washing or wiping it off, it just mocks you.
Ouchy ouchy ouch I know exactly what you’re going through, I found most lip balms didn’t work and even when they did the effects wore off after a few hours and I was back to the same old dryness.
Also I have terrible problem with picking the skin of my lips and needed to find a balm which would leave my lips completely soft so there was nothing to pick at. And I found it! I’m not sure if you’re able to post links to products here? But the lip balm is on a website named handmadenaturals.co.uk and it’s the cocoa and mandarin lip balm, it is amazing. Really really is. Oh and the store ships all over the world. I have really sensitive skin so finding something that worked wasn’t easy.
I live in a very dry place that gets even drier in winter, and all I use is vaseline. I don’t want my lips getting addicted to lip balm - I’d go broke trying to keep it in the house here. I like the idea of using it with jojoba, too.
Philosophy has a product called Hope in a Tube that works wonders. It’s like a lotion rather than a balm so it soaks in completely, and it’s made to use on lips and around the eyes.
zweisamkeit, you’re definitely right on the oil as a base layer. My lips haven’t gotten that bad since high school (when I think I was chronically dehydrated), so I kinda forgot about it. For me the biggest thing is exfoliation - I even got the SO to do it. He stands in front of the mirror and is all “ooo, they look really nice…”
Umpteenthing the Blistex medicated as a day to day. Half of its joy is in the cooling and squeezable effect. I love Burt’s, but you can’t get a real thick layer going of it.
I’ve got tubes of A&D ointment, a tin of Bag Balm and a couple tubs of Carmex lying about the house because if I don’t keep my lips moisturized religiously, they’ll crack and develop cold sores like mad.
You probably have naturally oily, tough skin if you believe this. My husband and I are complete opposites - he doesn’t grok how I need hand lotion, lip balm, and hair conditioner, and how I can get away with skipping a day of showering or washing my hair without looking and smelling totally gross. His skin just produces a lot more sweat and oil than mine does.
Natural Ice for the win. Good stuff. But oddly hard to find in my neighborhood. My local grocery store seems to stock it now, but for a while there I was ordering it from Amazon.
