What do you wish you had in your current home that you don't?

Craigslist. Can’t find the other thing there, anymore.

There were two things on my list when I bought my house that I did not get. One was a carport. There is actually a cement pad at the top of the driveway so the old man I bought the house from apparently decided against building one (he was the original owner). I’ve thought about doing it for several years but now that I’ve retired, I figure I won’t need to ever clean ice and snow off the car again and that was the main reason I wanted one.

The other was a screened-in porch/sunroom. My last apartment had a screened-in balcony with a swing and a ceiling fan and it was so wonderful to hang out there. But my front and back porches are too small as they are. My house is on a corner so the yard wraps around the front, leaving a tiny backyard. No room to expand the back porch. I could expand the front porch but it would make the house look really weird. If I could, I’d knock out a dining room window to make a door and put one on the side of the house, ending at the driveway. It would be doable but I don’t even want to think what that would cost.

The house had everything else I wanted and I love it so I can live without these things.

Other than a victoria’s secret model wife? A gas oven/stove so I can cook when the power goes out and they are easier to use.

I’d like a pipe organ.

It doesn’t have to be a great big one. The one Norma Desmond has in Sunset Boulevard would be fine.

We can use the gas stovetop here when the power goes out, but modern gas ovens have electronic ignitions instead of pilot lights, so no love there when the electricity is off.

Fairies/brownies/whatever to come in while I’m sleeping and clean house. I’ve tried training the cats, but they’re absolutely useless at anything that doesn’t involve napping or getting underfoot.

A ground-floor master suite - something we really missed in 2018 when my husband and I both had surgery that impeded our ability to go up and down stairs.

A better-laid-out kitchen: nearly impossible to move around if another person is nearby, and the upper-cabinet storage is basically nonexistent or inaccessible.

A mudroom - where we come in the house and can leave coats etc.

A slightly larger garage. Ours is the standard 20x20, and we can just fit 2 cars in, but no room to move around; sometimes it’s difficult to open the doors enough to get in and out of the car - and using it for any kind of storage makes it nearly impossible to move around without tripping.

A nonpermeable floor in the kitchen. The house came with hardwood in the front entryway and kitchen. I hate, Hate, HATE hardwood in the kitchen. The grooves between the boards just attract crud.

I know that “open concept” is all the rage, but I would prefer at least some wall between the kitchen and the family room. So that I can actually hear.

Pots and pans banging around, running water, garbage disposal, etc.

Trust me you can light a gas stove with a match. Any gas stove. Just watch out for your eyebrows
(Kids don’t try this unless you know how)

In unit laundry. I have in building laundry (which is so much better than out of building laundry), but it would be really, really, really lovely to not have to drag laundry downstairs.

Higher countertops. I listened to the kitchen redesign people on how high my countertops should be instead of finding someone who knew something about ergonomics. Luckily, I don’t cook much, if I did, I’d be in constant back pain.

Also, magic cleaning fairies.

There are stoves now that have a safety interlock. No power, means no gas and you can’t light it. On the bright side, these stoves are usually only 110v and you could make them plug in so you can run them off even a portable generator.

There is a similar issue for many gas water heaters now. Be careful that when you buy a new gas water heater, it can be lit without power.

I wish my kitchen had a walk-in pantry.

-A bigger kitchen with a dishwasher, an island with seating and new appliances. My kitchen is tiny with no room for a dishwasher or a table.

-A large walk-in shower. We just have the tub/shower combo. I bet no one has used the tub for taking a bath (YUCK) in over 10 years and that was probably a grandkid.

-A finished basement with a large room for entertaining, a home theatre, a small kitchen, etc. Our basement is just a basement.

-A nice bright laundry room. My washer and dryer are in my dark basement.

-All of my wood floors professionally refinished and all of my rooms professionally painted.

-A dog room. A room dedicated to the dogs - a place for their kennels and a shower stall for cleaning them. The washing station could be separate in the garage. Their kennels now take up an entire room that was originally (1936 when the house was built) a dining room. We used to use it as an office/extra sleeping for grandkids. Now you can barely walk through there because of the giant kennels.

-Blinds instead of curtains. Although it’s much easier to clean curtains.

-A closet set up just for shoes and boots.

-A nicer outdoor living area. We have a patio with table and chairs, but I would like a screened area with a couch and more seating.

-Someone to take care of our yard and flower gardens. I love planting flowers and looking at my gardens but I lose interest in weeding, etc.

-Someone to clean once a week.

Two master bedrooms. A utility sink. A half bath in the basement. A double garage. Wheelchair accessibility.

Ooo - that reminds me!

I wish the bathtub/shower had grab rails. Not because I’m old or feeble or disabled, but after using a couple “accessible” bathtub/shower units I have found that even the able-bodied can benefit from that sort of thing.

I would not mind some big organ pipe, though ocotillo and some various chollas would be preferable, especially as perimeter fencing. Sadly, those things would not fare well in this area.

Small house with a pipe organ for sale?- SOLD to the buyer in Seattle welcome to GR!

my house wish list

  1. fix the fireplace, modify for a stove insert and replace the faux brick facade that is the fireplace wall.
  2. A screened patio, I’ve tried to convince the MOH to create a michigan screen room outta the garage but no go, so a flying buttress off the back with a screeed in patio
  3. Concrete the driveway, and heat it why not!?
  4. add a deck to the front to camo the wellhead and E box, keep the veg away from the house.

Someone to talk to.
I ask the dog questions, but she never answers me.

Storage spaces - of any kind. We were fortunate to be able to purchase a 3 bed, 2 bath home through Habitat last year, but other than the bedroom closets, there simply isn’t any storage. At all. Not a pantry. The living, dining, and kitchen are all one big room, so no walls to put shelving against. There’s a laundry closet, but it’s jam packed with a washer, dryer, and the water heater. I have tiered hanging baskets on 5 different doors, freestanding shelves against the fridge, stuff crammed anywhere it’ll fit, and I’ve purged so much stuff I could probably have supplied another family with a full home’s worth of furnishings. The property is .75 acre, and I don’t have anywhere to store a lawnmower or any sort of yard tools, so we’re saving up for a decent shed ASAP.

Too much organ; too little house.
