Im curious.
A record producer is the person who oversees and directs a musical recording project in its entirety. The producer is responsible for quality, performance, and the overall “sound” of an album. Many producers (most) have backgrounds in engineering (recording/mixing/editing/mastering).
He/she has creative control that rivals that of the artist and often contributes to musical arrangements. The aim of that artistic control is to maintain and develop a commercially, and artistically successful record.
Producers also have administrative duties such as planning and managing the budget, and scheduling. Producers are generously paid and receive royalties on album sales that usually exceed those of the artist.
There ya go, in a nutshell.
They stand behind the sound engineer and say ‘Are you going to have that much bass? Britney Spears doesn’t have that much bass!’
Hope this helps. =)
