What does being a "friend" on SDMB entail?

Being friends on this message board is a completely meaningless platitude. It offers no real benefit. It is, at best, a very convoluted user-wide “like” button, being friends with someone is akin to saying “I enjoy engaging with you in conversation, and like your posts.” I extended a friend request to the OP for similar reasons to RNATB, but then saw later that RNATB beat me to it. I’m still open to being friends with Senegoid, though, he has some really cool posts in math and comp sci threads.

I wish I had known all this before I gave up my kidney.

Can somebody splain to me what being a “friend” on SDMB means? What happens when somebody friends somebody, that doesn’t happen otherwise?

As others have said, not much, but if someone is your SDMB friend then you’re always only a few clicks away from their profile, which in turn makes it easy to see their posts and what thread they’ve started. So if there’s someone whose writing you really enjoy, being their SDMB friend would help you to keep up with their posts without having to go through the search interface.
