Greed Over Patriotism?
Greed Over Policy
The spelling “olde” instead of “old” had nearly disappeared by the time the term “Grand Old Party” for the Republican party was created in 1876… The spelling “old” was about 400 times as common in 1876 as the spelling. It appears, in fact, that no one ever used the spelling “Grand Olde Party”.
So the “Grand Old Party” was 20 years old at the time it got that nickname?
Yes, or at least if the term was used, it was only a phrase that people said in conversation, not in writing. Incidentally, the only people who used the spelling “olde” in reference to the G.O.P. that Google is able to find are ones who called it the “Grande Olde Party”. If they were going to make that joke, they made it fully, spelling with an extra “e” for both the first two words. Still, Google could only find 29 examples of it in everything that Google has access to.
They stand for contempt for any of the USA’s worthwhile ideals (even though they are for the most part, aspirational).
It was actually originally Gallant Old Party*, the Grand came later.
*Yes, yes, I conceded the ‘e’ when RadicalPi brought it up in 2016
