In Cafe Society, there’s a thread about the differences between VT, NY and WI cheddars. Obviously, cheddar cheese was originally produced in the Cheddar Gorge, in England, and has since spread elsewhere. But what exactly makes the cheeses made in Ireland/Canada/America cheddars? Why not come up with a different name for them?
Cheddar is the name of a process of cheese making and is indeed named after the place where cheddar was first cheddared. But you can cheddar cheddar in places other than Cheddar.
It’s all about culture.
