What effects would be had by doubling strength?

Assume all of a sudden your muscles are twice as powerful, but still the same size. Also for the sake of argument assume the ligaments/tendons/ect are all also boosted so you don’t have to worry about tearing yourself apart. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve read that one of the biological limiting factors with size is that muscle mass increases in three dimensions while power only increases in two. So with this doubling of strength, not only would you be as strong as someone with an extra 50lb+ of muscle, you wouldn’t be hauling that 50lbs+ of muscle around with you making the shift in ratio even more dramatic.

With a different mass/strength ratio, would it be as if earths gravity suddenly got lighter, prompting you to have to relearn everything? Assuming strength is the only thing that changes, would you be able to jump almost twice as high? I’ve heard it said that if the moon had an earth density atmosphere you could fly under your own power. I doubt the strength change would let you on earth, but just how much of an increase would you need to change that? And any other unforeseen implications anyone can think of?

If you use all that strength you’ll probably have increased calorie requirements. If you want to maintain those super muscles you’ll probably need to exercise regularly and eat a relatively high protein diet.

Initially when you reach for something you may overshoot but you should adjust to that in a day or two at most.

Don’t have to guess, just study chimpanzees

or bonobos

BTW you don’t see chimps flying around. Flying doesn’t have much to do with strength. You have to have a physical structure (e.g., wings) that can generate lift greater than your weight. Human arms can’t do that even if doubled in strength. I don’t think the aerodynamics are there even if you could flap as fast as a hummingbird.

There’s a body of evidence that suggests that the Neanderthals were significantly stronger than modern humans. There’s also a theory that the reason we’re still around and they’re not is that the caloric demands of that extra strength were just too high.

Since we have a finite amount of energy, your super muscles would wear you out twice as fast. Effectively you would only be capable of the same amount of work, just twice as fast.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by doubling strength. When I was a teenager and began to lift weights seriously and I probably doubled my strength over a period of 6 months. I didn’t double my weight to do it either because strength is not directly related to muscle size. I don’t recall anything like flying, though occasionally I would break something until I got used to my new strength. I think most people could double their strength in some sense through the proper exercise, it’s not that great an increase. However, if your talking about doubling your vertical leap (assuming it’s not pitifully low to start with), that would take more than just doubling your leg strength in terms of the amount of weight you could squat.
