What exactly does someone have to do to get their PhD(English)?

If someone wants to get a PhD in English, what is required?

I assume they must:

  1. Get their Bachelor Degree.

  2. Get their Masters Degree.

  3. Get their PhD.

But what is the process after getting a Bachelor degree? How exactly does it work? Anyone here done it?
