What feature(s) must your next home or apartment have?

Preferably, Fiber Optic to the home. That is the future and ends the congestion problems with cable video vs internet.

Absolutely tops on my list, to the point where I wouldn’t look at the house otherwise, is basement windows big enough to get out of (or some other second exit strategy) in the event of fire. What is up with these 9 inch tall windows?

Will look for two sinks in the ensuite and possibly the kids’ bathroom as well, and a full 2-car garage in our next home.

Actually my parents have an extra fridge/freezer from their office currently sitting in the garage. I’m considering moving it here - obviously once the 2 feet of snow outside melts and it’s considerably warmer :D. But my landlord doesn’t salt the walkway, nor does he have a light that illuminates the driveway. He’s seriously putting himself at risk of a lawsuit (because salting is not built into the lease), but most tenants are students so they’re not in the position to sue.

Some people have mentioned wood fireplaces. My parents have a gas fireplace (with a remote!) and it’s The Best Thing Ever in my mind. But after this weekend when people’s heat and electric got wiped out, I know I’ll want a dual gas/wood fireplace.

FIOS is incredible. It makes cable feel like slow DSL.

Two full baths would be GREAT!

Also, a larger kitchen. My husband is a professional chef, so he likes to cook, but there’s hardly any counter space for him to work. And we barely have enough room to have both of us cooking together, which we love to do.

I’d like a gas range and a double oven. A jacuzzi tub. A breakfast nook. A master suite…

… but that’s me dreaming.

We’re currently in a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 2,000-square-foot detached split-level in good condition. So, more than that.

The townhouse I’m currently renting is actually just about perfect for me and my dog – so much so that I’m toying with the idea of looking into buying it. Here are the reasons why:

[ul]
[li]3BR, 2.5BA[/li][li]Finished basement[/li][li]Hardwood floors in the basement and main level (including the kitchen)[/li][li]Fireplace[/li][li]Eat-in kitchen[/li][li]Garage (1-car)[/li][li]End unit (meaning I only share one wall instead of two)[/li][li]Fenced-in back yard w/patio (not a huge yard, but good for a townhouse)[/li][li]Big LR and master BR[/li][li]Decent neighborhood and location[/li][li]Laundry room w/good storage[/li][li]Townhouse prices here aren’t completely out of the question[/li][/ul]
Before any buying could take place, though, the homeowner and I would have to figure out the windows: they definitely need to be replaced. All of 'em. And I’d want an inspection ASAP, because (a) some roof work was done right after I moved in, and (b) there are cracks in a couple of the BR walls (which could be bad or could be nothing).

Otherwise, though, my 8 months in this house have been great. If I did own it I would want to upgrade the kitchen and master bathroom (and replace the dryer; the washer is new), and some of the paint/wallpaper would need to be changed, but those are all cosmetic things. This really seems like a very good house: if I can’t buy it, I hope to at least keep renting it for a while.

A butler, maid and gardener… and a pool boy!

Actually, In honesty, I wouldn’t want these at all. What I would really like is a big (b i g) kitchen with two ovens.

Additionally, spacious and use-able outdoor area’s are nice.

A bidet, and a gas stove.

It has to be really small.

The only thing I’d desperately want is to have a double bed again. My current bedroom is so small a single bed is all it can accommodate. It’s useless for sleeping with someone; any time I pull I need to go back to the guy’s place. This is all well and good as it means I can make my escape after we’ve finished for the night but it would be nice to at least have the option of luring men into my lair. Love life aside, just having all that extra space to loll around in would be heavenly.

That, and a complimentary cleaning robot.

A dishwasher and garage door opener. And a bath tub large enough to soak in.

I like my house - it had everything we wanted and more when we bought it. The lot and location are great, since there’s no way we can afford waterfront property around here. Honestly, I do wish the dining room was a little bigger - it’s only 10X12, and with the table, chairs, and hutch, it’s crowded. 12x12 would be so much better.

A deck would be nice, too, but we’ll be putting one in maybe this year or next.

Our house is pretty spot-on right now. The one big thing I never even thought about was having the garage attached to the kitchen instead of the entryway near the front door. I’d rather not have to drag the trash through the living room to get it outside anymore, and getting groceries into the house would be much easier as well.

An automated toilet like the ones I was impressed with in Japan… (doesn’t take much obviously…)

It opens it’s lid as you approach it, the seat itself can be heated, there are options for jet spray and blow dry (which I didn’t go close to, but one did malfunction producing an interesting moment…apologies if TMI), you move away and it flushes itself and closes the lid.

Mrs Remarkable came across one that had an option for flushing noises and the like - I assume for discreteness.

I absolutely would get one of these.
