Spaghetti & Chili at Bob’s Big Boy
Regional treats:
I lived in Rhode Island years ago and became addicted to Drakes Cakes - Devil Dogs and the vanilla cupcakes were my favorites. I’ve been missing them for almost 20 years.
When I lived in Norfolk, VA we used to go (very rarely) to a godawful expensive restaurant called Alexander’s On The Bay. They had a fabulous dessert there – Lemon Mousse Pie. We are moving back to VA (not Norfolk this time, but very close) this summer and I sure hope Alexander’s still exists and still makes this pie.
When we move away from San Diego, I’m expecting to miss Sesame Triple Delight, a sinfully delicious dish I get from my favorite local Chinese restaurant.
Discontinued favorites:
Peanut Butter Twix
Those chili-filled hot dogs (Hi, Saint Zero!)
Those are the marshmallow/cookie things coated in chocolate, right?
They sell those at the shoprite near me. Still active in NYC. Guess you’ll have to come to the doperfest, eh? Grin
For my part, Hershey’s used to have a candy bar they advertised as ‘for chocoholics only’ - I forgot the name of it, but it was chocolate cookie/chocolate this, chocolate that, thing was great.
I liked Mr. Goodbars too - not gone yet, but hard to find around here.

the old fruity pebbles.
Brach’s Chocolate Jots. they are like M&M’s, but with a thicker candy coating, and I like the
chocolate better–it’s richer. I used to be able to get them in bulk, but all the stores have switched to just
selling regular M&M’s in bulk–which makes me wonder why anybody would buy them in the
bag. Also, Brach’s Malted Milk Balls are way better than Whoppers.
Jell-O 1-2-3.
Some frozen french fries(can’t remember the brand) that were made from rice, and flavored like onions. mmmmmmmm
Linda McCartney’s frozen spaghetti marinara(with fake meatballs) the best!
I miss the food of NYC in general. Whether it’s bizarre ethnic cuisine or a frank on the corner, I miss it all tremendously…
Yer pal,
Satan
TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
One month, one week, four days, 17 hours, 57 minutes and 20 seconds.
1669 cigarettes not smoked, saving $208.74.
Life saved: 5 days, 19 hours, 5 minutes.
The best snack chip I’ve ever had was something called Salsa and Cheese Dorito Thins. The company quit making them. Recently Tostitos have been making Red Pepper Tostitos, which aren’t quite the same thing, but pretty good.
Bar None candy bars. And P.B. Maxx.
I used to get shipments of Tastykakes from relatives. If you can believe it, my favorite food of all time is their old Oatmeal Raisin Bars.
I’d have to say Cuban food in general, which I fell in love with in Key West. While the ethnic food choices in Lexington are certainly better than you would expect in a small Kentucky city, Cuban cuisine has eluded us thus far. (And try as I might, I just can’t make a decent mojo by myself.)
I’m going back to Cayo Hueso in a few weeks, though…
Dr. J
oh yeah… taco bell doritos
Tortillas…real ones. When I visit my family in Tucson, I stuff my suitcase with tortillas. They don’t last long though, and then I’m back to these artificial pasty white versions that you have to buy in the refrigerator case. And as bad as they are, they cost three times as much. I also miss the Crispy Critters cereal from my childhood when it was overly sweet and crunchy enough to break teeth.
Ethiopian food…there used to a really good Ethiopian restaurant near my house-we went there every chance we got, but apparently not enough people did. It went out of business and there aren’t any within reasonable driving distance, oh well.
Brach’s Orange Creme candies, sold in bulk at the supermarket my mom frequents in the Hudson Valley. They may still exist, but the store wasn’t stocking them last time I was up there.
This one’ll sound weird, but: government cheese. Yes, those five-pound doorstop-like wedges of American Cheese Food. My family never qualified to get our own block (much to my surprise-- I’m guessing we just barely missed the cut-off for income), but it seemed like anyone on social security was elligible for cheese. So my grandparents would get theirs, for no other reason than that they could, and pass it on to us. I think it must just remind me of childhood because it wasn’t exactly the tastiest cheese ever.
Voortman’s Cookies, also in bulk-- the chocolate ones with the swirl of glaze on top. Can’t get 'em here… sigh…
I miss the authentic Mexican of a restaurant named Las Margaritas. It’s in Poplar Bluff, MO, and it sells perhaps the finest Mexican food I’ve ever had. The chips alone are worth it! Homemade chips that are neither swimming in grease nor bone dry, served with a great-tasting mildly spicy salsa. The entreés are amazing. A place like that puts Taco Bell to shame. As well it should. The crap they sell barely resembles food. IIRC, Las Margaritas replaced a failed Chinese restaurant. Also in Poplar Bluff, there’s this Chinese place called China Garden. Best Chinese food in the whole region. Too bad I had to move.
I really miss all the brands of bockbier when it’s not “in season”. It’s still only brewed in the spring for most brands. Traditional, but I can’t believe there’s any modern day reason for it. The richest class of the dark beers.
Jello Pudding Pops.
Mmmm…
Choc-O-diles.
Kind of a rolled up chocolate Twinkie with a coating of waxy confectioners chocolate. Nummy! Haven’t had them since I was ten.
Hey, inky! Choc-o-diles are plentiful here in southern California! And cheap, too.
From my misspent youth I miss A) Marathon bars. Two strips of chocolate covered caramel braided together. So named because it took a while to consume.
And B) Cassanos pizza. Little hole in the wall pizza joint near Dayton, Ohio. Very thin crust with no outer edge, similar to what Pizza Hut and Dominos have attempted.
