What Food do you miss?

Hostess Sour Cream and Bacon chips. Once upon a time it was my favourite flavour.

AND

Burger Buddies from Burger King. Does anybody else remember the 3 mini-burgers all squished together in a box? Like buddies!

Rackensack:
>>> the “businessman’s breakfast” at a little breakfast/lunch place across the street from Emory University (also now closed)<<<

Oh dear God! Please tell me Horton’s isn’t closed! I was born within a 1/2 mile of it, and it was a fixture of many of my earliest memories [later I lived near that intersection you mentioned: N. Druid Hills and Briarcliff, once I was school age.]

I’m afraid that whatever Horton’s may have once been across the street from Emory has been gone at least since I arrived in 1986. Heck, I can only think of one restaurant in the whole Emory Village area that’s been around under the same name since I’ve been in Atlanta, much less longer than that. If you can tell me where it was in relation to the Emory main gate I’ll see if I can figure out what’s there now.

Mostly childhood food. It’s probably still available but not generally. Please keep in mind I’m a very thin veneer away from hill-and-farm roots. We’d head out into the woods, just ambling, gathering and watching the real world.

  • black walnuts; a messy job to peel and shell, but worlds away in taste from the commercial stuff.

  • small, dead-ripe tree persimmons; they have a bad rep from folks who’ve tried to eat them un-ripe, but they’re unbelievably delicious; the huge Japanese varieties are tasteless.

  • fresh greens and cresses; the real stuff, gathered where it grows. Eat it and feel your cells perk up.

  • real sorghum, with the cane presses nearby and big troughs boiling, then the sorghum poured into tin buckets. It gives a depth and pow to baked beans, muffins, etc. that bottled stuff can’t match.

  • good country hams, smoked over hickory (or applewood!) smoke. Soaked well to remove the saltiness, then slow baked and sliced thin on light biscuits. Yum, yum.

Veb

Philly cheesesteaks, the genuine article. I’ve been to Philadelphia twice, and those are the only times I’ve had genuine cheesesteaks. Sheer ambrosia, I tell you.

I grew up in California, am now in Mississippi. I really miss avocados, artichokes, fresh apricots, and a good chile relleno.

Veb- I have an abundance wild persimmons in the fall! Know what you mean. You have to wait for the exact right moment, and be ready to snatch them away from raccoons, possums, and deer!

From my time in New York: I miss hot chestnuts, and big soft pretzels with mustard.

There are a few brands that are found in Michigan, that are not found here in AZ. The one I miss most is Faygo pop. Mmmmmm, Faygo - Rock & Rye. And Rally’s fast food restaurants. I love their fries.

Does anybody remember Priazzo (sp?) pizza from Pizza Hut? They made it when I was a kid…so that would be about mid-80’s. It was a deep dish pizza, with tons of cheese, and it was to dye for. Well, at least I thought so when I was 8. I miss that stuff.

I live in Mississippi, have since I was born in the wonderful summer of 1968. I await the day which America realizes I’m great and makes my birthday a general day of celebration.

Seriously, I’ve heard of In and Out, am jealous we don’t have one here. Sounds Tasty.

Saint Zero…
I think you’re in luck! I hear that In and Out is slowly expanding east!

Cheesesteaks – Extra fried onions, American and Provelone cheeses on a Amoroso roll;
Tastykake lemon pies;
Tahitian Treat soda – bottled by Canada Dry.

Does anyone want my address?

Chief Scott - Tahitian Treat? You drink that stuff? And have survived?

I’ll check at the commissary and see what I can do; I’m thinking that I can mail the stuff postage-free. If I can’t find it, I’ll make a super-solution of 1lb sugar to 12 oz water and dye it red, it’s about the same thing

While I’m at it, is there anything else you fine sailors need? Can’t help you with the cheesesteak, but I’ll look for anything that can be mailed.

Spatzle (German noodle-type dish)
Wienerschnitzel (This is not a hot dog!)
Milka Chocolate (Anybody who has ever had this knows what I’m talking about!)

Oh great, so now I’m salivating, thanks a heap!

Spaghetti & Chili (extra onions) at Bob’s Big Boy

Did someone say bratwurst from Wisconsin?? Wish I could have one right now! I also find that there are no breaded pork tenderloins in California. This is your breaded pork tenderloin (with some corn meal on the outside) that is bigger than the bun and almost bigger than the plate that you can find in Illinois but I don’t know where else. Does anyone know a mail-order source for these…or for Brats? The brats we get out here aren’t smoked and are big on gristle. Not good.

I’ve had Milka several times and it never impressed me. Of course I don’t really like milk chocolate in the first place–the darker the better for me!

Dodger Dogs they used to sell at Der Wienerschnitzel. I don’t know how prominent Wienerschnitzel is outside of Southern California, but to those who know what I’m talking about – gawddamn were they were good.

Tastykake anything pies! I miss them. In California, you can get any TK product, except the pies. I brought some back with me after a trip east a few years ago. I wanted to show a co-worker that those deep-fried sugar burritos are not the greatest snack pie. I also, for a while, paid people back east to ship them to me, but I gave that up, because the shelf life isn’t long enough to outlast the protracted shipping process. Probably why they’re not available out here!

I also miss Pepperidge Farm bread. Again, you can get any PF product out here, except the bread! To me, it is the only bread, outside of a bakery. I get shipments of it now and then. In fact, I only have one loaf of raisin at the moment, and no white or wheat. Sigh. Guess it’s back to cereal for a while.
