My favorite juice blend, which I used to drink all the time as a kid was pineapple-grapefruit juice. No one makes it any more and I’d probably drink less soda if I could get my hands on some.
Here are mine:
-
Quench - grapefruit soda.
-
Nehi Blue Cream Soda. Don’t know why, but creme soda just doesn’t taste right if it isn’t blue.
-
Heartland Granola.
-
FrankenBerry cereal.
Some of these items are still available, just not in the SF bay area. I’d be willing to do an exchange if someone knows where to get Frankenberry and there’s something in the bay area I could get for them.
As for BlackJack gum. I saw some for sale (along with Squirrel Nut Zippers) in a specialty candy store in Orlanda a couple of years ago. If anyone’s interested, I might be able to track down the name. I think they did mail order business as well.
Well, most of the things on my list are readily available in other places, just not here in NY…
Moonpies. They taste like vaguely-chocolate paraffin, but I love 'em. Washed down with an RC Cola. (Am I the only person who likes RC Cola?)
Aero Bars. Apparently these are Canadian. Chocolate with little air-bubbles in 'em. Got one in a CARE package from Pipeliner once. Delish.
Kinder Eggs. You know, you used to be able to get these here. I distinctly remember eating Kinder Eggs or something incredibly similar when I was a bebbie. Can’t find 'em anymore.
Smarties. The chocolate, non-American kind. For those last three, I’m considering a “Candy Run” up to Canada next time the weather’s clear and I’ve got a day off.
Trucker Cappucino. Out of all the truckstops I’ve been to in my life, most of which had those instant-coffee machines (you put in a dollar, it fills up your cup), only ONE of them had Cappucino. It was on the interstate somewhere between Albany and Watkin’s Glen. The cappucino was delicious (you know, I don’t like real cappucino, and I don’t like normal truckstop coffee, go figure). I haven’t been able to find that truckstop again, either.
Amen. OK was great! I mentioned this in another thread, but no one seemed to like it except me – people remembered more fondly the toll-free line to which people testified about the miraculous properties of this soft drink, but I really loved the taste, a cross between Coke and Surge.
For those of you yearning for obscure soft drinks, you might try http://www.popsoda.com/
I haven’t ordered from them personally and I don’t have any fiduciary connection with them but their web site seems to offer quite a few esoteric brands.
Omygod omygod omygod, I thought I was the only person who remembered this! I used to love PDQ chocolate and butterscotch. Mixed half and half in milk it was fantastic!
Thanks for the flashback.
Zappo
I miss Taco Bell’s Taco Light. It was basically a Taco Supreme in a flour taco shell instead of a corn one. I also miss the old Encherito that came with slices of black olive on top. Something about the one they have now is different than the old version, but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is.
When I was in elementary school (1970s), our school cafeteria served an ice cream bar of chocolate malt ice cream coated in chocolate with bits of toffee. I think they were called Buckaroo Bars. I would love to find those again.
Crack’dOff, around Halloween, several supermarkets in my area (Dallas/Fort Worth) were selling Frankenberry. But it wasn’t like the Frankenberry of my childhood. It didn’t have the little strawberry flavored marshmallows like before. Instead, it had strawberry flavored cereal pieces.
racinchikki, I can get Aero Bars at a British import store here in my area. I don’t know if there is anything like that in your area, but it might be worth a look.
I just thought of something else.
As I have mentioned elsewhere on the boards, i am severely lactose intolerant. I use Lactaid 100 2% milk for all my milk needs. This is real milk with lactase added to convert the lactose to glucose.
Well, they used to make Lactaid 100 Chocolate milk.
It was awesome!
Took me back to my childhood.
But it disappeared about a year ago, and I can’t even find anybody to complain to.
I can’t believe they didn’t sell enough of it.
From what I recall, these were taken out of production because when supplies were short, riots would break out at grocery stores and 7-11’s throughout the area. Once production ended, several hundred people had to be hospitalized for withdrawl symptoms.
Jumpin’ Jack… more addictive than crack.
I second (third?) the vote for old-style Vernor’s. Maybe it just tasted better when I was a kid.
Things that are no more which also probably only tasted good to a kid:
Original “Taco” flavor Doritos. Where did those go?
The homemade hot dogs from the German market down the street from my Grandmother’s house in Detroit. I shudder to think what is occupying that space these days.
Charm’s pops back when they were still really big (and only a nickel).
Bun candy bars–actually more like candy cow pies. Especially the maple ones.
Pappy’s liquid sassafras tea mix. I still see this occasionally and even more occasionally I’ll indulge, even though I suspect it’s carcinogenic.
Yes, I know the last two are available on the website Stoidela posted. I’m not Jonesing that much yet.
** That’s mostly because you have twice the density of taste buds when you were a kid. I still believe that there is a difference in the flsavor now, just because of how expensive real oak barreling would cost these days.
Ah yes, the same flavors as the square little Charms pastilles. The suckers had a bumpy texture (sorta looked like a bunch of grapes) on each side.
I made one of those suckers last through the entire premier screening of Ben Hur at the Dublin theater in Danville. The reason why it lasted all the way through is because I also ate the stick. So much candy for 5¢ (sigh).
Marathon candy bars. It’s been so long since I’ve had one, I don’t remember exactly what they were. I just remember them being goooooooood… Caramel, chocolate, and some other crap. But more importantly, as a six-year old, the candy bar was approximately the size of my arm.
Peanut Butter Twix are back! I had one yesterday! Well, at least here on the west coast they’re back. Can’t vouch for anywhere else.
Once you make it to MS, you’ll be able to find all the Moon Pies you want. RC Cola too.
Beer.
Damn do i ever miss my Beer
ohhh…there it is. All good again, later later
Upham
Bierly’s is alive and well in Japan, Zenster, just in case you were wondering where to take your next vacation. It’s available in orange, lemon, grapefruit, apple and tomato.
-
A couple of years ago I found something called “Sherpa Tea” at the convenience store. Dunno what was in it but it was the best-tasting tea I ever had. Never saw it again.
-
Coffee Chocolate Chunk ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s just came to Japan earlier this year, but are still only offering a few flavors. During the first week, I found this one and was in heaven. Ever since, the stores have had nothing but Caramel and Green Tea.
-
Quality bagels and good, cheap Mexican food (together, if necessary). Just can’t seem to find them here.
–sublight.
Mexican pizza from the Bell Pepper Co. Your basic deep fried flour shell, spiced hamburger, taco sauce and sliced jalepenos subbing for pepperoni. I haven’t been able to duplicate them at home. Used to get loaded and go there late at night (well, late for central Nebraska towns of less than 35k persons). BTW, does anyone know if the Bell Pepper Co. was a chain? The one back home is long gone, and I’ve never seen another one, but maybe they were regional and we were on the fringe?
-mdf
New Coke.
::ducking::
::ducking again::
::running away really fast::
Jack-in-the-Box tacos. They closed down all their stores in
the eastern half of the U.S. in 1981 and I haven’t had one
since.I don’t even know if they still have them on their
menu. One of the best fast food items ever.
Does anyone remember Koogle? It was a flavored Peanut Butter, they had banana and chocolate! I remember it from being a kid in the 70’s…too good.
I forgot about Koogle!Great stuff!!! Anybody remember Space Food Sticks? Whole box at a time.
