Looks like I’m getting an XBox 360 for my birthday this weekend. Can you folks recommend some good games for me? I would say 3rd person action/adventure games are my favorite, but I’ll play RPGs and FPSs as well. I’m probabaly going to get the bundle from Costco that comes with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which I hear is excellent.
The games I’m looking forward to the most are Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Fable 2. However, if my wife gets the Civ game, I’ll never see my Xbox again…
Bioshock is an enjoyable first person shooter. The Orange Box might be up your alley if you’re into the Half Life games. Grand Theft Auto 4 while not the second coming of Elvis is still pretty good. If you’re into music games, there’s Rockband and Guitar Hero. For RPGs, there’s Oblivion, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Mass Effect.
Least Original User Name Ever will be in soon to recommend Halo 4.
Edit: Duh, forgot the third person action/adventure. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is very cool.
It’s an older game (I think it came out in mid-06) but I highly recommend Dead Rising. You’re a photographer stranded in a mall that’s been taken over by zombies, and you can use almost anything as a weapon. It’s a fantastic game, and the soundtrack is great too.
For third person action/adventure, I’ll have to agree with Pithy Moniker about Marvel, Ultimate Alliance. What an amazingly, surprisingly fun game! It reminds me a lot of the playstyle of Diablo2, actually.
Heh. Yes, I will be. Halo 3 is the best multiplayer experience out there.
Are you going to be on Xbox Live? If so, let me know what your Gamertag is and we can add you to the Dope Gamertag.
I’ll second Blue Dragon. It’s great. Civilization Revolution is very nice as well. If you want another Rockstar game, Bully was very good as well.
Let me know if you want to get in touch with other older gamers as well.
Note, too, that there are many demos available for free download via XBox Live (assuming you are signing up), including some of those mentioned here. Try-before-you-buy is always a great way of saving money for the stuff you’ll really enjoy.
I play only sports games. Although MLB 2K8 may be one of the biggest disappointments of my video-game life, last year’s Madden (and the one that comes out next month) doesn’t make me regret dropping the $400 on my XBox.
Seconded on Dead Rising. Beating a zombie to death with a park bench is great fun.
I’d also add that if your 360 is online, check out the Xbox Live Arcade. Pac-Man Championship Edition and Heavy Weapon and N+ and Penny Arcade Adventures have all owned my life at one time or another.
Halo 3 - needs no description
Crackdown - sort of a cartoony GTA where you’re a cop ridding a city of gang violence and develop super strengths and such
Rock Band - needs no description
Guitar Hero - needs no description
Civilzation Revolution - needs no description
COD: 4 - needs no description
Lego Star Wars - A recreation of the star wars movies in action game style using lego.
you can also download a lot of really fun games off of the arcade
Thanks for all the ideas. Mass Effect will probably be the game I pick up first. Two of my coworkers suggested Marvel Alliance. Of course, Guitar Hero will be added to the collection fairly quickly.
I’ll be joining XBox Live, probably at the begining of August.
I may be guilty of completely hijacking the thread, but it was a horrible game. The new pitching system was very innovative, don’t get me wrong, but, just off the top of my head, here are some of my complaints:
It’s still entirely too easy to hit home runs.
Because of the horrible lag, the game is impossible to play online.
2K did something cool, in that they’ve stayed on top of monthly roster updates. Unfortunately, rather than take the previous months updated rosters and continue to make additions, they–for some insane reason–seemed to go back to the default rosters and make that months updates based off of that. Ignoring the updates they’ve already made. So, for example, the Phillies picked up Rudy Seanez in April. In the May update, Rudy was added to the team. In May, the Phils acquired TJ Bohn. In the June update, the Phillies had TJ Bohn… but no Rudy Seanez! I thought my head was going to explode.
The game still just isn’t fun.
Let me mention, too, that I really wanted to like this game and tried to fight on its behalf for a while. But eventually the crap just became unbearable. I REALLY hope that EA gets the MLB rights back sometime in the next couple years… my life just hasn’t been the same without MVP Baseball.
Everyone likes to bitch, “IT’S THE SAME GAME EVERY SINGLE YEAR!” Well exactly what would you like them to add? They’ve already had modes were you can control everything from roster moves to the draft, to ticket prices. Now you can control two players at once (runner and a blocker) and this year, now make up receiving routs on the fly. Hell even my old Sega Genesis Madden game had a mode were you could run your guy through the combine (the mode sucked, but it was there).
I don’t play as much as I once did, but plan on getting Madden and Tiger Woods when they both come out.
