What Germans beers that Germans drink (in Germany) are available here in the USA?

I don’t know if it is available as an import but Thurn and Taxis Pilsener is a pretty good German beer.

Whoah! I am not contributing to any seditious conspiracy against the Postal Service!

The beers that are most often served at my in-laws’ house (Schwabians both) are Optimator Doppelbock, Paulaner Hefe Weisse on the heavy side. On the light side (for drinking with a meal for example) our choices are usually Dinkelacker or Warsteiner, both Pilsners. Occasionally they have Spaten available too (which I don’t particularly like). I have noticed that the choices are usually the same when the relatives are visiting, so I guess these are pretty authentic choices.

Personally, my liebesbrau is the Dinkelacker, on just about any occasion. It’s tasty and hoppy, but not as overwhelming as the typical microbrew. I do enjoy the Optimator from time to time, but I can only handle one and still be able to get up off the couch. It’s very heavy with a strong flavor, slightly bitter. It will dominate the palate, so I wouldn’t recommend it with a meal. Very, very tasty and delicious though.

Oh and by the way - if you happen to find yourself in Germany, you simply must have a Tannenzaepfle. It’s a fruity Pils from Baden and it is absolutely the closest thing to ambrosia I have ever tasted. Pity I’ve never found it over here.
