Bullshit! There is nothing anyone could say that
could justify killing animals for the hell of it. It’s wrong. Nobody touched on why shooting a dog or a cat is cruelty to animals and shooting a wolf is hunting! I couldn’t care less about any god equation. There is no god. There are just people who think that they are godlike. Instinct? Do you see chimps or apes going around killing other species for the hell of it? I never saw that Jane Goodall special! No other species does that. Ya know why? because it’s wrong! You guys really are a sad bunch. I see all hunters as needing their guns as penis extensions because they’re just too girlishly without them! I’m not just name-calling. You really need to have an inferiority complex to have to go out and kill defenseless animals.
You’re weak!!
So did you miss the part where people pointed out that many other species of animals kill for the hell of it, like cats and weasels?
While I agree with all of this, I’m kinda surprised anyone would eat a cat. I’ve always been told that carnivore meat is generally pretty bad-tasting stuff.
How is that relevant? Some other animals kill for fun so it’s OK for humans to?
Lions kill cubs fathered by other lions in order to have a chance to impregnate the lioness themselves. Does that make it OK for humans to do so?
Not at all. But if a central part of the OP’s argument is that “no other species does that!” repeated ad nauseum, then the fact that other species do it does become relevant.
You still have yet to explain whether you were being deliberately obtuse earlier, or just have trouble with analogies.
Then why did you start this thread?
Yup, and overhunting is almost always commercial hunting.
I’d eat bear, but I agree carnivore meat is supposed to taste really bitter and foul.
I other words, you have an aopinion, but no actual rationale that should convince anyone else of its truth.
They are hardly defenceless. Animals have developed myriad behavioral and physical defences over the years. Deer have exquisitely good hearing and hair-triger reflexes, not to mention enough speed to make accurate aim useless.
Other predatory species have their own ways of avoiding death.

Um , did I miss something? I didnt see anyone advocateing going out and kiling anything for the “hell of it”. Aside from one person mentioning poachers , pretty much everyone said that they hunt for food. Maybe you should spend a little time out in the woods before you paint everyone with the smal pecker brush. Maybe if you had to hunt something in order to surive you would gain a little perspective on the subject. Then again , maybe you would stick to your high ideals and starve to death.
Hunting is our most primative sport. It goes back to prehistoric times and fulfills, I guess an ancient need.
I enjoy hunting. I like going out on horseback and patroling my property. I enjoy it. The villagers are always happy to clean and cook my kill. Nohthing much goes to waste.
I am willing to admit that it (I think) a power rush. Marking my territory. Real reptile-brain stuff.
Heck consider the source. I enjoy both bull and cock-fighting.
I hunt. Generally I think poorly of people who hunt for trophies. At any rate, hunting is not a right, it’s a privilege.
We must be watching different specials. Chimps kill other mammals quite often, and not just when they’re desperately hungry. But, that’s not the worst of it.
I’ve seen a tribe of chimps kill an infant of their own species (pretty gruesome, seeing the adult carry the infant up the tree in its mouth, grab it by the arm and smack its head into a tree, and kill it by biting it on the face). They did then eat the infant, but it wasn’t from hunger; food was plentiful in the area. There are many documented instances of chimpanzees killing their own kind, not to mention other mammals.
Anyway, I wouldn’t hold up other primates as examples of how we ought to behave.
I’ve never hunted. I have no intention of hunting. In short, I don’t have a dog in this fight. But…
People like InLikeFlynn really are a sad bunch. I see all people like InLikeFlynn as seeing guns as penis extensions because they’re just too girlish(ly) to accept facts over emotion! I’m not just name-calling. They really have an inferiority complex to have to go out and attack people whom they don’t understand nor have any intention of trying to understand.
They’re weak!!
Are there people for whom a gun is a supplemantal phallus? Yes. But do all people who hunt have an inferiority complex? Do most? I don’t think so. But speaking of inferiority complexes, why is it that some people (InLikeFlynn) feel the need to jump in and attack large groups of people for no apparent reason? Could it be that they are trying to make themselves feel superior? If that’s the case, then wouldn’t such a person be compensating for his own inferiority complex?
Compare and contrast:
“All African-Americans are criminals.”
“All Hispanics drink too much beer.”
“All European-Americans hate other races.”
“All hunters have an inferiority complex.”
“All Americans are warmongers.”
“All Christians are stupid.”
“All Asians are good at math.”
“All [insert group here] are [insert stereotype here].”
Those are pretty stupid statements, eh?
InLikeFlynn displays a profound capacity for ignorance when he makes such statements as “all hunters as needing their guns as penis extensions”. I don’t understand why people hunt for trophies. Personally I think they are idiotic in doing so. But I flatter myself that I’m intelligent enough to separate them from people who hunt for food. Now, the OP rants against trophy hunters; but then InLikeFlynn goes on to make insinuations against all hunters. So I think it would be difficult for him to go back and say, “Oh, I was only talking about trophy hunters!” because he is indicted by his own words.
What can you say about a person who finds pleasure in killing? Not hunting food, not culling the herd to prevent starvation; killing to taxiderm part or all of the victim and display it, like a more Egyptian version of the old head-on-a-stick.
Those who hunt for pleasure find that eventually, Karma hunts them.
Hunting comes in so many varieties.
Some hunt every deer season. They are clean, responsible, and trail wounded deer. They have meat freezers and nothing goes to waste.
Other dumbass deer hunters leave beer cans in the woods, shoot signs, movement, and sometimes children. They wound deer and let them wander off. They don’t eat anything, just look for antlers. Not realizing, of course, that the best antlers can be found at yard sales.
The worst are the guys who want to kill elephants, rhinos, tigers, lions, etc. Check that, the guys who shoot the animals on those game ranches are the worst.
I don’t hunt anything but paper targets. But I can’t say that all hunters are bad people and sit down to a hamburger for lunch.
Among the ethical hunters I know, these folks are called slob hunters, and are reviled accordingly. They’re often poachers also.
I can’t claim to understand the trophy-hunting mentality. And I’ve already mentioned that I’d have trouble shooting a fellow predator. And any killing of endangered animals is criminal, and should be strictly punished.
As far as shooting animals on game ranches, do you mean the ones where they have canned “hunts?” I don’t see what the sport in that is, and neither do many hunters that I respect.
And believe me, I am not using my bow and arrows as any kind of penis substitute, thank you very much.
Would you rather have the native people allow their herds to over graze the lands and have all the elephants et. al. go extinct? By allowing limited hunting of trophy hunting you protect the animals by giving them, and their habitat, an economic value to the local community.
Personally, I wouldn’t do it, but what is the difference, really, between shooting a ‘wild’ goat on a game farm, and slaughtering a goat out in a barn? Either way, the animal ends up dead. Like I said, I would not be interested in hunting on fenced land, but so long as the animals are not being abused or tortured, I don’t think there is a moral problem.
I agree with you re slob hunters, but my family has had more problems with people on ATVs doing damage on our land than hunters. Some people are just low class slobs, but it doesn’t have anything to do with hunters per se.
When most of you begin speaking of morality toward animals you begin to enter the weird world of radical PETAdom. Should Ted Bundy have been tried only for the crimes wherein he did not eat his victims? I hunted rabbits when I grew up because they threatened our gardens. I hunted snakes because they ate our chicken eggs. As for fun, there was no greater pleasure than running thru the night after a raccoon with the hound dogs wailing. Not to mention the pleasure of swatting a mosquito or visualizing germs being destroyed as I gargle.
Why would someone assume that there is a right to kill something for the hell of it to be given?
Just to add on to what Archergal and Rhum Runner posted. Trophy hunters especially in the Africa continent help support the economy of those countries in many ways. It’s definitely not cheap to go on a big game safari, and some of these trips are upwards of $15-50K a pop. So they support the local economy. By shooting big game, they help feed the local populace. By the fees they pay, they help the locals manage all wildlife, including the ones on the endangered list.
Would I shoot an elephant? I doubt it, even if I could afford the fee (around $10-15K). But a Cape Buffalo? Definitely.
I exclusively hunt and shoot people for the hell of it.
I play paintball!
SPLAT!!
