What happened to IMDB?

That’s one of several sites that tried to replace the IMDB message boards, but none cover as many TV shows and movies and none have as much traffic.

Exactly. And nothing replaced them. moviechat tried but its not the same.

Being able to discuss plot minutiae there was something that only that site provided, and now its gone. The Amazon execs who got rid of that board basically destroyed the main reason for going to the website.

For you. I go to read the trivia stuff after I’ve seen a movie.

I’m in the exact opposite camp, if I wanted to discuss a movie or TV series in general, there are probably dedicated forums for them. I like that each forum was dedicated to that movie/episode as is generally kept the discussions, positive or negative on target. I’ve had some very intellectual discussions there, but sadly there was always someone who would jump in like (an usually, obviously a) kid and say, “This movie was trash, <insert name> director/movie was better!”. Okay, but that’s not what’s we’re discussing here. Sadly, the trolls won out and was one of the main reasons given for deleting the forums.

I use Bing for general search, and when searching for an actor or show, there’s usually a link to IMDb, bypassing the front page.

And if IMDb still had the forums, I probably wouldn’t be here. I’d still be arguing religion, politics, and generally arguing with trolls and idiots.

And does anyone remember Miley, who kept posting selfies, and thought she could sing? Whatever happened to her?

T.m.d.b. is a place I like to post to talk about films.

Yes, I really miss that. Part of my movie watching ritual used to be going to IMDB afterwards to read discussions, ask/answer questions, etc.

From what I understand, they were spending a lot of resources on moderating those message boards, and apparently decided it wasn’t worth the investment. I have to believe their page views dropped a lot as a result.

While we’re on the topic, IMDb has also managed to ruin Box Office Mojo, by slowly strangling the amount of free information available on the site, and by parsing it out to multiple pages so you have to click more often. At this point to get anywhere near the same level of information you have to subscribe to IMDb Pro, and apparently even that has gone downhill.

I know. A horrible ruination of a formerly useful site with craptastic web programming that doesn’t work on many less popular browsers.

Links to subscribe to IMDbPro are all over these places now.

They don’t seem to understand it’s all about the data. Forget trying to cram content down people’s throat (esp. pay content).

Like others mentioned, I don’t have a use for the front page, I go straight for the search bar in case I didn’t google the movie title 1st and then cliked the imdb-link directly. When it comes to forums, moviechat.org is the closest one to the real thing out of all the other sites that emerged.

I use a bookmark to the front page at IMDb, but fortunately their search bar is right at the top and I don’t have to deal with the rest of the page.

And I agree this new makeover is preposterous. But it looks to me like it is oriented for mobile devices now, rather than laptops. This is a trend we are seeing everywhere, even at SDMB.

This sounds like it could be useful. We should get some people working on that.

It’s what, IMDB.com? I wouldn’t even need to google that.

(And that is hideous)

They’ve changed the rest of the site now. It’s HORRIBLE.

I go to the imdb.com webpage. I put the name of the movie that I want to know about in the line at the top. This takes me to a webpage that looks pretty much like it’s always looked like. Yes, the webpage imdb.com is crowded with crap. Ignore it.

They’ve changed the rest of the site now. It’s HORRIBLE.

I miss the …news? There used to be four or five news headlines linked to ‘Variety’ or something, you could click on (‘more’) and it would take you to that site. You know. 'Brad and Angelina were arrested in Los Angeles last night according to police records…(.cont’d at Daily Fail).

I like it. As one who does go to the imdb.com URL directly (and as one who really doesn’t remember the home page after the redesign) I find it at least as usable now. At the upper left corner, you have what we in the industry* call a standard “hamburger” menu, which when clicked on shows you everything at the site, and then of course below you have various sections that I would become familiar with quite readily after just visiting a few times. I also like seeing that the white background style that many websites have adopted over the last few years (see theatlantic.com, a perfectly acceptable site of course) was not used, and find the black background refreshing. Finally, I noticed that at the bottom of the page there is a recently viewed section of what you’ve looked at lately. All in all, I’m pretty happy with the new site.

*Eh, I build websites…

ETA: I note that I like the home page. As others have noted, the rest is its usually ugly self.

IMDB has a front page?

I just went to a movie page and it looks the same as always.

On any movie page, look for the yellow “IMDB” logo in the upper left corner. Click on that, and it’ll take you to their front page.

As many have noted, there doesn’t seem to be much use for the front page if your main use of the site is looking up details for particular movies and TV shows.
