Nicholas Cage was at his best as Asswipe Johnson, there simply is no way but down from a pinnacle like that.
This is an 11-year-old thread? Why not just start a new one?
Seven years, ten months.
Oops, I just looked at the first post. I’ve been finding myself unreasonably grumpy this month.
There’s this weird idea that acting is an attempt to recapitulate a person’s actions as they would have been if the circumstances depicted had come to pass in the real world—as if we’re just fly-on-the-wall onlookers to something actually happening. Nothing could be further from the truth, and Nicolas Cage is one of the few actors constantly refusing to go along with this fantasy. I think that alone is genius, but there’s a larger case to be made for the quality of his acting, which is well discussed in this Wisecrack video.
I’m a bit bored of the assumption that he must be a wacky fellow who can only do wacky things.
I caught Color Out Of Space just before the lockdown and towards the end, when things are getting a bit mad, there was an idiot in the audience who insisted on laughing at every moment of Cage’s performance. Because of course it’s Cage, he wants us to laugh at his wackiness. He wasn’t portraying at all a corrupted human being trying to remain himself under the face of an alien influence.
I’ve still got time for Cage. The one that was really sad was Jim Carrey, another really excellent actor stuck in money-making movies.

This should be a real career boost for him.
He does a very good job thespianing in that recent pig movie…
“Pig”?
In his upcoming movie “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”, Nicolas Cage plays “a fictionalized version of himself who feels unfulfilled. Cage also portrays Nicky, a figment of Cage’s imagination and resembles a younger version of Cage.”
So there’s that to look forward to.
Trailer:
Here’s some world class thespianing from earlier in his career.
I didn’t notice that it was old until I read in one of the early posts about working in a “video rental store”, whatever that is…
