What happened to our trees?- Hurricane related

Last weeks storm brought strong winds to coastal New Jersey. At this time of year the local maple trees would normally be lush green. Except for the leaves on the leeward side of the trees, they are wilted and brown. Some are speculating that salt is the culprit. I can attest that water was being picked up from the surface of the ocean and back bays and blown as I was out tending to my boat during the stronger gusts.Could the wind alone have desiccated the leaves? Other trees were impacted but the silver maples seem to have taken the brunt of it.
