What happened to the Kennedys (Jack and Bobby)

Apparently not master enough.

What I have never understood-why were the Kennedy brothers turned into some kind of secular saints? Both were ruthless politicians, willing to cheat and break rules to get to the top. Jack was known to be a philanderer, who left his pregnant wife alone, to deliver a stillborn child-while he was in Italy, banging a whore! Bobby was also fond of extra-marital affairs, and may hev had an affair with Marilyn Monroe He also violated the Constitution (by witholding information about the Bay of Pigs disaster) from an investigative comittee (headed by Senator Goldwater).
So why these two crooks became beloved martyrs-it is just weird!

How does having sex outside of marriage make them criminals? Which article of the Constitution was violated? Please enlighten me.

We should consider the upside. When two superior races like the Scotch-Irish and Cherokee are mingled, the resultant hybrid is markedly superior in every respect, which has led to the dominance of Texans in the social, political and intellectual spheres. Those of us so blessed should make ourselves freely available as providers of superior genetic material. As stern duty demands.

OK, some of us are so fucking stupid we can’t even post to the right thread. I blame Bush.

They were, but there’s a lot of image there. They were young, attractive (Jack more than Bobby), enegetic, rhetorical geniuses, and represented the entry of the new, young World War II generation onto the national stage.

As Kennedy said himself in his inaugural address:

And, they were both assassinated, which made them into martyrs.

In popular myth, the Kennedys (esp. JFK) are given credit for far more committment to the civil rights movement than they ever actually evinced. The heavy lifting was done by LBJ, a flawed giant if ever there was one. He would likely be fondly remembered if it hadn’t been for that one big FUCKING mistake…

Lifting his dog up by the ears?

Washing styrofoam cups?

Letting some punk-ass mod beat you to a joke?

I actually only came back to comment on Bremer’s being the inspiration for Travis Bickle, which I had not known. Just got lucky, I guess.

Not a bad try, but again, fiction is no match for reality.

Well, in 1963, Massachusetts still deemed adultery a crime (JFK’s state of residence). Second: Senator Goldwater was conducting an official congressional investigation of the “Bay of Pigs”. RFK thwarted this investigation, and denyed access to top secret documents. Seems to me that violates the seperation of powers. Third:RFK and JFK used government-owned transport (AF #1), in the commission of a crime (adultery). There is even the suggestion that JFK used church-owned funds (contributed from the Archdiocese of Boston) to fund the Bay of Pigs operation (wire fraud, mail fraud). Why those two were never prosecuted is beyond me!

One, actually, the executive branch refusing to comply with the wishes of the legislative branch is a pretty good example of separation of powers, not the violation thereof.
Two, how is this a crime?

Do you have any evidence that RFK used AF 1 to commit adultery?
The Bay of Pigs was set up and waiting for JFK when he stepped into office. He went along with the claim by the CIA that it was an Ike approved mission. He did nothing to set it up himself and the suggestion that he went over and got Cardinal Cushing to spring some huge number of funds loose for gallivanting around the Caribbean in just a couple of months (while most of the external funds would have needed to be sought in 1960 during the CIA preparations prior to JFK being elected) is silly.

No kidding.

JFK had regular sexual relations with two White House “secretaries” (named “Fiddle” and “Faddle”), both on AF1 and in thw White House. See Hirsch “THE DARK SIDE OF CAMELOT”

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the question I asked about the claim you made.

John Kennedy was an extremely popular president at the time of his death. His lowest polling was in the 60s. Rumors about his infidelities came after his death. He was seen as a very strong president after the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962. I was one of the 80,000,000 that thought that we were going to be vaporized at any hour. Afterwards, he had a grateful nation in the palm of his hand.

Bobby was known as being ruthless at first, but he genuinely changed over a period of years. He might well have made an even better president than his brother. I think he understood better the power of the presidency to make a difference at that particular time.

What rules did they break to get to the top?

Well, for one thing JFK’s first congressional campaign was bought by his father. Old Joe paid a flack named Russo to run as an independent (there was a republican named Russo facing Jack. The electorate was confused, and split the vote-Russo lost. later, in the 1960 presidentail campaign, Joe paid the Cook County (Chicago) machine to have thousands of dead people vote for Jack-Chicago swung the election to JFK. Bobby almost certainly violated MANY laws as ATTY General-one was raiding the offices of the Teamster’s Union-Bobby hated Jimmy hoffa. Also, bobby used the FBI to place illegal wiretaps on Martin Luthor King’s phones-they even bugged the hotel bedrooms where king met whores for sex! toatally illegal, and unethical to boot!

Jesus, how many times does this have to be refuted on this board? I’ve got to be the 100th person to explain this:

Kennedy won the 1960 election with 303 electoral votes to Nixon’s 219; Harry Byrd got 15. Even if Illinois had gone to Nixon, Kennedy would still have won the election.

This doesn’t make cheating right, but “Chicago” did not “swing the election to JFK.” In any event, the evidence for cheating is not quite as overwhelming as you claim. Despite the legend than Nixon refused to appeal, there WERE appeals, challenges and recounts in Illinois and none turned up enough Nixon votes to makie a difference.
