What happened to the sniffer dogs from the McCann case?

For those who don’t remember, when Madeleine McCann went missing two sniffer dogs found the “scent of death” (allegedly) in a hire car or at the bottom of some stairs, or possibly both, the internet doesn’t seem entirely sure. No actual DNA or blood or any other forensic evidence was found on further investigation by the police, and the dogs seem to have been completely wrong.

The same two dogs were involved in the investigation into child abuse at the Haut de la Garenne children’s home in Jersey, where they supposedly found part of a child’s skull, since claimed to have been part of a coconut shell.

That seemed like quite a bit of excitement for two dogs, so I looked up some details. Their names are Eddie and Keela, and they are former police dogs from Yorkshire. I was hoping they lost their badges for being mavericks who broke the rules but got results, but apparently they were just very bad at their jobs, sniffing out bodies and their fluids. I’m not quite sure how they ended up in a globe-trotting role as international noses for hire, but that seems to be what happened.

So, my question is what are they up to now? Have they retired in shame? Are they still active? Google fails me.

I did find an article from a website called “dogs don’t lie” claiming Keela made more than the Chief Constable, but that’s from 2005. So I suppose they could be dead now, if she was born in 2004. Still, I’d like to know.
