No luck on the call. The line was busy(?) and all the alternatives don’t work if you’re not in those area codes.
I spent a night in Denver lockup because I forgot to pay a $30 broken headlight ticket. Mostly I was surrounded by drunks who beat their wives. Not a fun time, and my eventual fine was tripled.
Talk to the court or the DA or something. They’ve probably heard it before and have thingies in place to help. It cost Denver far more to lock me up than the fine was. They don’t want to lose money or waste time and precious jail space.
Of course, this isn’t Florida, so how the heck would I know?

You can email them, after going through the procedures described here: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/mailpage.htm
Otherwise, an old-fashioned letter might be your best bet.

What exactly is a ‘random plate inquiry’? Is that during a traffic stop? Something you do when a vehicle pings your Spidey Senses? Or just something you do when sitting at a light?
I’ve always wondered if they’re checking me out just sitting in traffic. ('course I’m a long-hair, so I tend to get looks anyway, especially in small towns)

The thread Gfactor linked to has just about all the information on the subject. Including some brilliant insights from me. If that doesn’t answer all your questions just ask.

What happens if you have an unpaid ticket in a state that you do not reside in and live nowhere close to? I got a ticket in New York a couple years ago that I never paid because I lost the ticket and shrugged it off at the time because I live in Tennessee and don’t often find myself that far north. I’ve been pulled over a couple times since in a few other states (I have an acknowledged speeding problem) and there’s never been a word said or letter received from New York but could there be in the future?
I know if I get pulled over there, that I’m pretty much screwed but am I in any danger of my Tennessee license being suspended or possibly having a warrant served to me because of a New York infraction? Also, how would I go about paying this if I don’t even remember what municipality caught me? All I remember is that I was on I-87 somewhere in Adirondack Park and, as mentioned, I lost the ticket.

Again can only tell you what could happen in my state. If for some reason I had thought you may have a license from another state I may ask dispatch to do a look up through that state. If I had no reason to think you had another license than I wouldn’t look for one. I would have to look at the other 49 states individually. In NJ it would be more likely that you get caught by the DMV. You can not legally get a license if you are suspended in another state.
As for warrants. If one was issued from another state then it would probably be a no extridiction warrant. I guess it is possible but I have never seen a traffic warrant with extridiction.
Usually when a very old ticket comes up on the docket in court it is because someone tried to renew their license or get one in another state and the old suspension comes up. They have to come back to New Jersey to clear up the charge before they can get their license. Sometimes they are allowed to plea through affidavit and not physically show up.

Agreed.
If the vehicle in front of you has a bumper sticker that says “Arrive Stoned” how likely are you to run the plates? ![]()

Extradition, you mean? Or is there actually something called extridiction?
Well, I did my taxes today and that will definitely help me take care of this. Thank you all for your advise and information.
Wasn’t there an “Ask the Cop” thread?
Loach, have you ever had a guy offer you a donut on a traffic stop? (I just watched some stand-up routine on Comedy Central where the comedian joked about this)

Yes there is but you are not supposed to know about it. Shhhhhhh.

Yes, that’s a good thread, and it answers most of my questions. Thank you both.
I’ll chime in again if I have any more. See ya on the road! ![]()
