What happens if I refuse to give a plea at court?

What happens if someone acknowledes that they fully understand the situation around them, but steadfastly refuses to give a plea?

I’m not looking at a sppecific event here, so answers from any and all juristictions are welcome.

The court will enter a plea of “not guilty” for you.

Peine forte et dure.

What?

If the defendant refuses to enter any kind of plea at all out of obstinance, the court usually just enters a plea of not guilty and sets it for trial. The defendant generally comes around. On some occassions with an incarcerated defendant who refuses to plead one way or another, the judge will just reset the hearing and let him sit in jail for a week or two with no “good time” running to make his mind up.

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Thanks for all the speedy replies
