I was at work today, staring at my Apple Studio Display, and got to wondering what would happen if I sliced it open with an x-acto knife. (Yes, I was bored.)
Specifically:
I know it’s a liquid crystal display. So would a bunch of liquid crystals ooze out? Is the liquid too viscous to ooze? Is it runny?
Would the display keep working? Assume I cut a several-inch-long slit across the screen. Would the uncut parts work? Would the whole thing go wonky? Would it go dark?
Would any part of the display continue to work if I cut off the plastic outer layer entirely?
Would anything else interesting happen?
The Baby Jesus would kill a kitten.
And bump your thread, in a helpful fashion, for the Morning crew to answer it.
The fluid is spread very thin and it is too viscous to flow.
If you cut a slit carefully enough, the display would still work. You would just have to be careful not to damage the material deposited on the bottom piece of glass.
In fact, you could remove the entire top cover and the display would still work. If you did this, you wouldn’t be able to see anything because there is a piece of polarized film on the front (and back) of the display and you need to look through this film to see what is being displayed.

One more thing. It’s not a “plastic” outer layer. It’s very thin glass with a plastic film on top of it.
