I actually thought it would only be a legal problem if she converted to catholism. She could convert to Islam, Buddism, Satanism, not problem. But there is an explict law saying she (or her spouse) cannot be catholic…
See above - The Act of Settlement (1701), while explicitly forbidding Catholics from taking the throne, also requires that the monarch “be in communion” with the CoE, which implicitly forbids any non-Anglican from the throne.
Not every week, from what I’ve read, but very often. She has spoken about her Christian faith in past Christmas Day messages, although only in passing, and is a stalwart traditionalist, so I think it’s very unlikely, to say the least, that she would ever depart from the C of E.
I agree with Anne Neville that the British anti-Catholic prejudices of years past (based, in part, on actual Catholic-led, Vatican-approved plots to kill and/or overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and other monarchs) has diminished considerably. I don’t think it’s too farfetched to foresee, someday perhaps not too long from now, the disestablishment of the C of E, with future British monarchs being free to join other faiths, or none at all.
Prince Charles, FWIW, was quoted a few years ago saying he’d like the monarch’s title changed to “Defender of the Faiths.”
I thought that was matt. ![]()
