I would expand that to include student loans. They suck, but if you’re not a minority, disabled, extremely active in the community (those being the categories with the most scholarships) they’re almost unavoidable now.
For us, the point of a credit card is to help strengthen our credit rating, plus not to have to carry too much cash. We religiously pay our credit-card bills in full each month, so we never get socked with interest. But this being Thailand, we occasionally have to pay the small percentage the merchant is supposed to pay and has agreed not to sock the customer with, but it seems to happen less frequently than it used to.

American Express now lets you carry a balance, even on the traditional “Charge Card” type accounts.
Actually, according to the first graphic on this gallop poll page, most people pay their credit card off at the end of the month.
Yea, I use mine like a debit card, but it is better than a debit card in many ways:
- I don’t have to pay until the end of the month, which allows me to have my money longer.
- If there is a dispute over a certain charged amount, it is fairly easy to deal with. With a debit card, the money is already gone, and is much harder to get back.
- If someone steals your CC, they don’t take money out of your bank account.
- I get 1% cash back for everything I charge.
Why would I use a debit card, if I could have all of that?
