What has replaced live Doves, in the Olympics?

As many of you know, they don’t release live Doves during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics games anymore…because of a disastrous incident in 1988 when the Doves flew into the Olympic torch, barbequeing themselves. :smack:

But, my question is; What have they used instead of the Doves, in the games held since then? They seem to use a different sort of substitute each time…

-Atlanta used tethered kites.
-Nagano used Dove-shaped balloons.
-Sydney used a projected image of Doves.

But, for the life of me, I can’t remember what the other games have used. Does anyone here know?

Barbecued? Really? D’oh!

Hmm, barbecued squab…

Anyway. A little Googling turned up several claims that the doves were rarely released during the Winter Games because of the cold. Apparently this was done in Squaw Valley but that’s about it. But Nagano, as you mentioned, featured a release of dove-shaped balloons, and in Lillehammer plain white balloons were released to symbolize doves, which in turn symbolize peace. How symbolic.
