What if I move to Dixville Notch, NH?

And I’m a real douchebag. I register to vote, but don’t show up for their little midnight early-voting party. Are they out of luck, and have to wait for the rest of the state to release the results?
If so, it is amazing that this has never happened. Surely someone fell ill or had to be out of town on business, or emergency at least once?

Oh that’s easy - they just ask “Bob The Town Republican” who you would have wanted to vote for & write it in for you.

Why would anyone live in Dixville Notch if they didn’t want to be part of the voting? It’s like their only reason for living. They wake up every four years, cast a shadow, and decide whether or not we’re going to have four more years of Republicans.

I was wondering this myself. NH law allows the polls to close when every registered voter has voted or the official closing time whichever is first. If you’re a registered voter, and you don’t show up, they have to wait for you. Someone could, if they wanted, be a supreme dickhead and screw up the tradition.

Dixville is way up there. There’s only one employer (the Balsams) so if you worked there your life could easily be made difficult. There’s nothing else around and you rely on your neighbors for a life. It’s not a good idea to piss off the rest of the town.

I don’t think jtgain can just can move there. As you said, the only employer is the Balsams, and I’m under the impression that they own the town - which would mean that only employees could live there.

They don’t “own” the town, but they may own all the housing in the town. Paper companies own a bunch of the land up there.

My sinister plot is to go there, hang out and make friends, bake pies for them every day for a year and then, have them vote for me!

Can you imagine the newscasts?

“Amazingly, DMark was just elected by a landslide (12 to 2) in Dixville Notch. Reports are that this momentum might just lead to a win by DMark in NH! Stay tuned to find out who the hell DMark is and how his Administration will change America!”

I’m thinking this could work as a song, and I’ve already got the title – The Biggest Dick in Dixville Notch. “All the rest of the folks wanna kick him in the crotch…”

“He sits around all day drinking twelve year old Scotch
He’s the biggest dick in Dixville Notch”

For some strange reason I hear Johnny Cash singing that in my head …

“He doesn’t have a clock, and he doesn’t have a watch
He just keeps 'em waiting to vote in Dixville Notch.”

Is there really a town there? I stayed at The Balsams and never saw a town - I was under the impression that The Balsams was Dixville Notch. In fact, the voting is done in the hotel, and there is a sign on the hotel property proclaiming that you are looking at Dixville Notch.

Maybe there are a few small properties around and a few rich retired people who live in the hotel and that comprises the population of DN? Hopefully someone who really knows can fill me in because I forgot to ask when I was there!

Dixville is a Township in Coos County NH. In NH, townships are unincorporated parts of counties, and have limited forms of self-government including voting.

While the Balsams is the main employer, I believe there are some folks who don’t work for the resort who live and vote in Dixville. They probably are loggers or work down in Errol. I’ve spent a lot of time up there and the cost of living is pretty low; you don’t need much to get by if you are willing to live rough.

WMUR said Monday that everyone in Dixville works for the Balsams. I bet even they have a fact-checker.

Nothing to keep you from putting up with a long commute to a job out of town, or eventually retiring there, if you were a total political junkie.

Then it’s changed since I spent a lot of time there.
