What happens when we find out that the Saudis are protecting Osamah Bin Laden (OBL)? Even worse, what if we learn they are funding his plans…including the 9-11 scheme?
And, if Intelligence did know the Saudis were involved, would the Federal Government even tell us the truth about this to preserve our relation with the Saudis? And, while I’m asking, what if Saudi Arabia found itself following in Iraq’s footsteps? Would we let it slide? - Jinx
Actually, there’s no doubt Saudi Arabian nationals played a LARGE part in funding Al-Qaeda. Not surprising, really, OBL’s family comes from Saudi Arabia, and they are fucking rich. They’re also good friends with the Saudi royals. Most of them aren’t crazy about Osama, but the connections are still there, and some do support him.
Plus the Saudi government is- responsible for promoting a virulent, fundamentalist form of Islam called Wahhabism through Saudi-financed schools in various Muslim countries. (In many Muslim countries, the schools are run by mullahs.)
Now, is the Saudi government openly supporting Al-Qaeda? Of course not! They would never do anything that stupid! Elements of the Saudi government probably supported OBL covertly prior to 9/11, though that would be difficult to prove, and our government doesn’t seem particularly interested in researching it. After 9/11 any support of Al-Qaeda by government officials would have to be EXTREMELY covert, and frankjly I doubt it occurs at all. That doesn’t mean that high Saudi officials wouldn’t lend support to Al-Qaeda in ways that are very difficult to trace, such as by providing advice and intel to them. Once again, the Bush Admin. isn’t really interested in finding any of this stuff out, as the Bushes are good friends with the Saudi royals.
All the ignorant skepticism of the OP doesn’t impress, in short.
OBL hates the Saudi royalty. He thinks they are apostates and have committed a crime against Islam by allowing U.S. military bases to occupy muslim holy land. He wants to topple their regime. He may be a folk hero to the common man, but if he’s captured or killed the Saudi ruling class will breathe a sigh of relief.
With the caveat that any elements of the Saudi government that covertly supported ObL post-1991 would have had to have done so on the sly from their own leadership. He’s been an official enemy of the royal family and persona non grata since that period ( he actually escaped from house arrest and fled to Sudan that year, along with some other exiles ).
Not sure I buy this however. I don’t consider Bush to be that stupid.
Actually the skepticism is not ignorant. As you yourself acknowledge, the odds of “Saudis” ( which I assume referred to the government ) sheltering ObL are virtually nil.
