What in the hell is that stinky fish for in the column about coffee pitch??

In the latest Straight Dope Classic Slug’s illustration has a man listening to his coffee cup - and a woman licking a stinky, worm-infested fish. Color me confused.

Did the original column have an answer to a second question concerning delicious rotting fish?

A bit of a hijack, but it’s on teh same column. Could the change in pitch of the coffee cup being stuck by the spoon be due to the cup heating up from the coffee?

Got it, it’s sushi.

Mystery explained. Thanks!

Speaking of sushi, at least one Canadian province plans to ban sushi that has not been first frozen for (I think) ten days for the very reason Cecil gives. Sushi fans are up in arms about it.

:smack: I remember the sushi column and I never even noticed the guy listening to his coffee or thought that was odd.

3 days, not ten.

And any decent sushi place already does this…

Not in the opinion of some, I gather. (Note: “All I know is what I read in the papers.”)

There are some Japanese delicacies (I suppose you’d call ‘em “sashimi”) where the pieces are sliced off the living fish – its’ clamped down on the table, and they slice off bits. That way, you know the sashimi is fresh.
