What instrument is played in the beginning of You Are Everything?

The Stylistics song. The instrument sort of repeats the mantra ‘you are everything and everything is you’. Is it a guitar? A banjo? Some synth thing?

Electric sitar

Really? There’s such a thing?

Totally off-topic: Went on a short youtube trip after finding You Are Everything and now I’m wondering: Did Simply Red only do Stylistic covers?

Based on this I think it appears to be a guitar with some processed effect going on.

That clip didn’t have the part I’m talking about in it. Also, that live version doesn’t sound like the recorded version.

The Coral electric sitar, made by Danelectro, was a popular instrument in the '60s and '70s. It was really an electric guitar with a special bridge and a set of amplified resonant strings to imitate the sound of a real sitar. Here’s Steve Howe of Yes playing one onstage. Note that he has his regular guitar still strapped on. He had the Coral sitar set up on a stand in playing position so he could quickly switch from regular guitar to sitar for a solo.

Cool beans!
