OK, so karaoke night is coming up and I want to do “Bang on the Ear” by the Waterboys. But I need to know what that expression means. It’s an expression you never hear in America… surely the singer doesn’t mean he wants to smack all of his former loves upside the head. At least I hope not, because for me it would ruin a great song.
So: Is this expression common, or at least in use, anywhere?
And what does it mean?
