Recent threads have sought to define Greens, Dems, Pubs, Libs, Commies, Anarchists, Nazis, and Fascists. Have I left anyone out?
We’ve argued whether the Media has a liberal or conservative bias.
What I’ve come to wonder is: What is the benchmark for a centrist? Is there a benchmark? Does it slide as the political climate changes? Does the swing of the political pendulum redefine what is meant by centrist? Or are they defined by bedrock ideals? Would a centrist stand firmly on:
(and I’ll interject my opinion, feel free to disagree or add)
I’m to the left of most these but suggesting what I interpret as middle of the road.
Miranda - Yes
Roe Vs. Wade - Yes
Late term abortion - No
Gun rights - yes
Assault rifle ban - on the fence
Waiting Period - Fuzzy
National Database of Gun owners - Definately not
Infringement on privacy - currently overboard
National Healthcare - Provides a necessary service as it is now. (medicaid/medicare) Should not be increased.
Minimum wage - important, but no need to raise it any time soon.
Welfare - for the truly disadvantaged. Lets see some work ethic.
Taxes - Yes, More! just don’t take it out of my pocket.
Marijuana decriminalization - regrettably, No.
Minimum sentencing guidelines for not violent drug crimes - too costly to taxpayers.
Immigration - Higher fences
International policy - Nuke em if they can’t take a Coke.
Environment -Protect it at all cost as long as I can fill my SUV for under $40 (Mileage may vary)
Death penalty - Burn baby burn.
Well there are a few of what I consider the centrist American position. Feel free to add or argue.
