What is a moon pie? - it looks similar to something we have in the UK called Wagon Wheels - marshmallow between two softish crumbly cookies, covered with chocolate.
It is an indescribably yummy confection.
[Jasper] Moon Pies…What a wonderful time to be alive. [/Jasper]
You do know that the law requires you to drink an RC Cola when you eat a moon pie don’t you?
I was gonna mention that bit about RC.
From Dave Gardner (southern comedian)
“…4 RCs, 2 moon pies and some after sippin’ dippin’ & flippin’ snuff.”
What is the link between RC and moon pies?
mmmmmmoooon pies.
I’m getting that moon pie fishing lure!
It’s a southern thing.
Are they the same as SCOOTER PIES?
As a southerner, I have no information on scooter pies.
The Moon Pie, however, is much like what Mangetout has described – a thick wad of marshmallow, sandwiched between two softish, crumbly cookies, each about the size of a man’s palm. The entire affair is then dipped in a layer of chocoloid substance.
Goes well with milk.
The link between RC Cola and Moon Pies is, I suspect, due to both confections’ popularity in the American South.
I saw something similar at a grocery store here in PA. They were calling them whoopie pies. My comment to my companion (who I’m not sure got it)? “That’s a horrible thing to call Ms. Goldberg.”
Judging by people’s links it looks exactly the same, BTW Wagon Wheels are getting smaller as the years go by - this is not some nostalgia thing, apparently to keep the price constant the makers keep reducing the size.
The whole point of the Wagon Wheel IMO was that it was slightly larger than the child eating it.
Just to pipe in here… With the RC bit
There is a Gaming Magazine for Magic The Gathering and the Pokemon Collectible Card Game… called Inquest Gamer.
Inquest, when ever it mentions playing in, or sponsoring a Tounement and or a Game Night… (At least a 4 Hour Event, more often 8-10 hours) it always mentions to bring RC and Moonpies.
It is a running reference/joke in Inquest articles.
It seems from where I stand (Atlanta GA) RC cola is more the Rarity than Moon Pie, which is not that commonplace.
But yes, I would say it is a Cookie Mashmellow Sandwhich, covered in Chocolate. I think Moon pie brand is the only brand with Double Decker thickness. It of course has a moon picture on it, and it used to advertise “Try it hot” (via microwave).
There’s a quiz bowl tournament held ever year about May at UTC named after the Moon Pie and during the opening announcements they toss moon pies (still in their wrapping, of course) at the assembled players. The next day is the RC Cola trash tournament, naturally.
Chocolate Moon Pies are good but Bananna Moon Pies are a delight!
Probably the most stupid request for a cite ever, and I know that manufacturers of confectionery do routinely reduce the size of their products (often so that after a while, they can do the “15% bigger!” thing, but is there any hard evidence that Wagon Wheels really were larger in the good ol’ days? - I remember them being too large to fit in my hand, but my hands were much smaller.

Sorry about the double post and typo. It,s the thought of those Wagon Wheels
For those that haven’t tried moon pies, just think of a pre-packages “s’mores”.
Marshmallow center , graham-crackery sandwiching, and chocolate covering.
When I first heard about s’mores, I asked someone to explain what they were. After hearing it, I just thought that they had described a moon pie.
