What is an equitable split of a family farm?

Needing less farm land, or needing fewer farmers?

I think there’s an argument to be made that small owner-operated farms are increasingly becoming obsolete, but we aren’t going to be post-food anytime soon.

That’s what I’m hoping to get out of it. And if my BIL really needs 100% of the assets, so be it. It sucks for my kids and grandkids but life isn’t always fair and sometimes the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the few.

My MIL did tell my wife the other day that “No one is getting disinherited.”

I wrote farmland because I meant farmland. Nobody said we won’t need farmland. We are steadily needing less of it. This is not a new development.

Well, we haven’t had our meeting with the financial guy yet and my FIL’s health is fading fast. I told my wife that if something either in the will or the trust is changed soon, it’s going to be set in stone as is. We talked about the hypothetically proposed 65/35 split. She was OK with that with the exception that mineral rights should be split 50/50. I told her that I felt the same way about potential wind energy windfall. She agreed.

When I said, “I don’t know that we’re going to do with 35% of a farm”, she replied “We’re going to sell it!” So I guess that settles that.
