what is freedom?

inspired by another thread, pls post one or two (as opposed to a list of ten, so we know better which is more important) freedoms which you value.

freedom is the ability to let your child wander without a guardian. a safe place is a free place.

freedom is the ability to do what others can do. eg. no caste system. you can do whatever you want, go into any career (including aspiring towards presidency or government post) etc

The ability to be viewed and treated as a necessary & respected member of a society, and not a tool the government uses to fulfill its agendas

What is freedom ?

Freedom is assuming responsibility for ones own actions.

Something that is rapidly dissappearing in the U.S.A. :frowning:

I’d rather say that freedom is being given the chance to assume responsibility for one’s own actions.

At the moment, freedom to me is having control over my fertility/reproductivity.

I’m sure freedom will mean something else to me shortly. Freedom is so many things at so many times… I doubt it’s ever complete or total, but whatever amount you have, you cherish.

Just thought I’d point out that there are those of use who consider safety and freedom to be exact opposites.

For me, Freedom is, first and foremost, not having big government tell me what to do in order to keep safe.

Secondly, freedom is the ability to question leadership.

And, finally…freedom is the ability to post what I want on this board without fear of having the secret service show up at my door.

I really value the freedom to search for any bit of knowledge I want with at least a good chance for success. For example, even though we are currently led by George W. Bush, I can buy a books that suggest that he is really a bad president.* Even though most of the people around me are Christians, I can go to the public library and find out why other people think Buddhism, Islam, or Satanism is the way to go. Freedom is having books about creationism and Darwinism on the same shelf in my office. Well, you get the picture. When I think of freedom, I think of book stores and libraries. When I think of oppression, I think of bonfires fed by religious tracts and political manifestos.

Freedom is being allowed to reach one’s potential without interference. I get to go to college and have the opportunity to try out for the presidency or the Astronaut Corps!

Freedom is being allowed to lead the lifestyle of one’s choice.** I get to go to any church I want this Sunday! Or the porno store, if I so choose.

There are several freedoms I think we should have that are presently denied to us here in the United States, but at least I can freely try to change those things, and that’s pretty cool as well.

  • Or so I would hope and guess–I’m not sure I’ve actually seen such a book now that I think about it, but I’m sure they’re out there, just as they are for most of W’s predecessors.

** So long as the lifestyle in question doesn’t interfere with other people’s rights . . . I guess I would limit certain freedoms when it comes to ax murdering and stuff . . . but I’m sure you all understood what I meant.

hmm i was thinking of a safe place where i don’t expect crime, what has that got to do with the government and my free- oic, freedom means so many things to different people eh?

freedom is not having to deal with spam or invasive advertisements…

Actually, freedom would be the ability to advertise what one wishes, in whatever manner one wishes.

Freedom would also be the right to ignore and/or stop that sort of advertising if one so chose.
