What is happening when one gets an earworm?

You know, the song or refrain that you can’t get out of your head. What is going on physically in your brain?

Yesterday, I wore a new red dress and some pretty dressy red high-heeled sandals. I thought it was a bit flashy for work, but dammit, I wanted to wear this outfit. However, I had Fancy by Reba McEntire running through my head. I didn’t look slutty, and I did get a lot of compliments, but somehow the “red velvet trim and it fit me good” got stuck in my head.

[Buffy]Principal Snyder? He has “Walk Like an Egyptian” stuck in his head. And the boys in this school are seriously disturbed…[/Buffy]

Bump, hoping someone can explain?

You mean what’s happening in the brain when an earworm’s going? I don’t think anyone has caught one with a scanner yet. Maybe you could suggest the research possibilities to a local hospital. It would be really low cost. All they’d have to do is ask everyone who was scanned if they had one going, and what the song was.

Piggy-back research. Gotta love it.

(They could also count up the number of times that the answer was, “well I didn’t have one. . .”
