Is it like being a Christian in the Republican Party?
And what is it like to be a Muslim in the Democratic Party?
I don’t understand. Surely the percentage of Christians in the Republican Party is higher than the percentage of atheists in the Democratic?
Speaking from experience, being an atheist who votes Democratic in Texas and Utah, at least, is weird. In Texas in particular, most of the fellow Dems that I knew were either African-American or Latino and self-identified as Christian, or upper-class whites who went to fairly liberal Christian churches.
What’s it like being a free man in Paris? Other than the obvious; unfettered and alive.
Democrat in Arkansas. I’ve been to many meetings, worked on campaigns, and it never was brought up.
Oh, absolutely. Every time the President ends a speech with “There is no God, America!” I get a warm, fuzzy glow.
I suspect it is more like being Jewish in the Republican party. You get tolerated, but you still have to listen to the “Christian Nation” crap. In the Democratic party it is more the wonder of religion crap.
Why in the world would you think that? What percentage of Democrats do you think are atheists?
Of course not. The majority of Democrats are Christians just like the majority of Republicans are.
You’d assume they would be in good company.
Granted atheism is not the same thing as irreligion, but it is along the same lines.
Excluding blacks and Hispanics (who are overwhelmingly religious and largely Democrats) makes that poll useless at best and actively misleading at worst.
The subject rarely comes up. I ignore other people’s religiosity, and don’t express my atheism unless it’s appropriate.
It’s also not saying that most Democrats are “Not Religious”, it’s saying most people who are “Not Religious” are Democrats, which is not the same thing at all. If there were only twelve atheists in the entire country, and all of them but Bob were Democrats (Bob’s more of a libertarian), you could accurately say over 90% of all atheists are Democrats, but those eleven heathens still wouldn’t make up much of a voting bloc.
I disagree, while I admit to not having all the background details on the linked graphic.
I have plenty of friends and acquaintances who don’t consider themselves particularly, if at all, religious, but it’s more that they are non-practicing and not raising their kids in a particular faith. Very few of them would come close to identifying as atheists.
I’ve never been a republican Christian, but they sure do seem to be pretty proud of themselves and self assured over there.
Velocity, are you a Republican? I am not trying to set you up for anything. I just want to know because I know quite a few Republicans who believe what you’re questioning, that most Democrats are Atheist, which could not possibly be further from fact. As others have already stated, most democrats are Christians of some flavor or other.
Also as stated above, most Hispanics are Democrats and most Hispanics are Catholic, my wife included. Most blacks are Democrats, at least nominally, and the vast majority of blacks in America are Christian.
My question for you is where do you get the idea that most Democrats are Atheist? As I stated, I’ve heard this before, but I’d really like to know where it comes from.
sorry, missed the edit window.
If you mean, do I feel like I’m “with my people?” then hell no.
I have gotten a little too comfortable a few times and mentioned the A word among fellow democrats, and been looked at like I told them I was a baby eater.
Mainstream Christians in this country, regardless of party, do not generally have to hide and wonder if they’ll be judged or remain friends with someone because they love Jesus. Everyone grew up around Christians and knows many of them. Not everyone knows they know an atheist.
We get extra cookies.
What does “being Christian in the Republican party” mean to you? Do you believe that the Democrats are the party of “atheist values”, whatever those are?
Like, if the comparison is meant to be that the Republicans are looking to make the U.S. Christian and the Democrats are looking to make the U.S. atheist, that strikes me as almost entirely wrong (the most accurate version of the second half is that people working towards keeping the country secular – which is not the same as making it atheist – are more likely to be or favor Democrats than Republicans).
Perhaps you could invite yourself to the next precinct meeting. You might find that topics other than how to destroy America do come up, and they do not end with “Allahu akbar!”.
I don’t think the OP is coming back.
