What is it like to be an atheist in the Democratic Party?

talk about an oxymoron

Blasphemy!

“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away” --PKD

Atheists are undeniably leaning Democrat.

Dunno why people got so butthurt over the question.

No, they end with “maʿ al-salāmah”.

It’s simply absurd to imply that the position of atheists in the Democratic Party and the position of Christians in the Republican Party are equivalent. As has been pointed out, atheists leaning Democrat and Democrats leaning atheist are two totally different things; the Democratic Party as an organization certainly isn’t “leaning atheist” or identifying itself as “the party for atheists!”. The party does do a better job of protecting the interests and values of most of the non-religious and the “seculars” and the “nones” than the Republican Party does–not that that’s saying much. In terms of things like separation of church and state, and issues which most seculars/nones care about like reproductive rights or marriage equality, the Democratic Party is not as bad as the Republican Party. But it’s not like Democratic Party politicians are constantly extolling the virtues of secular humanism the way many, many Republican politicians go on about “faith” and “God and country” and even “Christianity”. In fact, Democrats are pretty heavy on the God-talk, just not quite as offensive about it as most Republicans are.
