What is mankind's greatest ACHIEVEMENT?

Religion? To me, that’s more ancient; more along the lines of humankind pulling itself out of the animal world kind of thing. Not “modern”, like the other things you’ve listed.
I also don’t think of it as a higher pursuit, not when it was first “achieved”, anyway. Originally, in general, it was based more on superstition, fear, and control issues.

Well, I actually still think all that is true, but whatever.

Do you mean you think religion evolved into a great achievement?

Weird. ?? Sorry 'bout that.

In my book the fact that mankind survived as long as we did is our greatest accomplishment.

I think either the great pyramids or the straight dope are the greatest achievements

Invention lets you build Leonardo’s Workshop, which is a very important thing to have.

I had a whole different view until I read what pranaches45 had to offer.

As to Apollo 11, I believe it is the greatest thing that happened in my life time. When history forgets WWII, the United States and the second millieum, it will remember Apollo 11.

The greatest thing that humans has done is SURVIVE.

Beer.

Going to the Moon.

The two may be intertwined.

Hmmm. The way I think of it is we have only enough time to build one small spaceship out with records of one achievement in hopes that one day another alien culture picks it up.
Language, what would the people who pick up the ship think? Wooptee do, they figured out how to communicate. Whats new?
Religion would be an interesting read for who discovers it but its not to much a a legacy. Which religion do you tell them about? Why would they be interested in that? It would’t tell them anything excpet for what some of us may or may not have believed.
Moon launch, ok this gives them an idea of how advanced we were. Not interstellar, but we had an idea that there was stuff outside our own planet and had some limited idea of how to get there.
Our DNA genome would be an accurate description of the dominate species on the planet. Heck, whoever picks it up may be capable of making a human with just the information we have.
Science is broad, but if we could jam it all into some type of medium it would be well worth it. It would show what we know, how we found it out and our possiblly unique ideas about the universe. They may even learn a thing or two from us.
So my vote goes for modern Science.

Science is a good idea but the problem is, what if they are ALOT more adcanced than us and they say, oh science, big whoop, they even got a few things wrong. So why not something totally outlandish that is less likely to be found elsewhere. Go for the shock and awe and send ru paul and dennis rodman, or science because it is probably the closest link we would have with them

Not as important as the Hoover Dam.

Time. Before time was invented we just had duration and no way to track that.

Abandoning the idea of our being subject to duration and creating a measurable form of time was the first step to subjecting our will upon the universe as opposed to being subject to the universe and out own instinct.

“I hungry I eat.”

“It’s noon, WE eat.”

Time as a measurement allows us to predetermine all aspects of activity. Instead of observing weather for our planting, or before that our migration. The creationg of time allows us to predetermine our own path in concordance with will and need.

The library. Preservation and sharing of knowledge is the basis of our civilization.

Either the printing press, or the development of the birth control pill and condom.

Consciousness.

Belgian frites with 39 flavors of sauce. Mmmm. There’s bound to be one the aliens will like.

But saying one small spacecraft is a bit limiting. What if you reckon New York is the greatest achievement of humankind? How are you going to represent that in a few books and photographs?

Seriously now, modern computers and the Internet are a huge leap forward. There’s no easier way to communicate with someone on the other side of the planet. Besides, without computers I couldn’t play Civ II or read this board.

Another vote for going to the moon. I like the Internet too, but going to the moon was a step on a completely different level.

That robotic sex toy – Britney Spears I believe it is called.

Either that or formal language.

Isn’t the internet just a modern version of the printing press? Basically they both do the same thing, allow information to be passed on to lots of people.
Greatest Achievement: not destroying ourselves.

Commerce, trade, barter, specialization…
