What is meant by a "4-dimensional ultrasound"?

so, why are we debating the existence of 4D if this article so nonchalantly refers to it as if we all knew what it was? what is it? they have a 3D picture of an ultrasound, but i don’t see any of the 4D ones they mentioned.

4-d ultrasound is just a series of 3-d ultrasound pics strung together to make a video, that’s all. The 4th dimension they’re using is time.

oh. that’s kinda dumb. they shoulda just said video.

Seems to me that the marketing boys have decided that in order compete with so many things being in 3D nowadays, they have to go one better.

“The competition’s product is in 3D. How can we outdo them?”
“Let’s say ours is 4D!”
“I’ve no idea what that means.”
“Great, let’s do it!”

Example.

Here is a very good site with more details about what it is, and what good it does.

Essentially it allows for a highly more detailed look at a foetus. It increases the bonding between parents and child as it is more realistic than a normal 2D scan. It also allows for a better look into movements and limbs to determine if there are any problems.

The joys of technology!

In marketing the fourth dimension usually equates to one of the following:

A) Time
B) Movement
C) The Third Dimension
D) Comfort, Chocolate, Unforgettable Characters, etc

More often than not it seems to be C.

I prefer the new Ultrasound X-treme! with the smell-o’-vision option.
