What is obvious and what isn't

When I was a kid adults were always telling me the earth was round. But they never finished the story. They never told me we lived on the outside surface. I thought the earth was a hollow sphere and we lived on the inside surface. I spent countless hours staring straight up, trying to see China. Today people tell me that was stupid; it was obvious we lived on the outside, they say. Why is it obvious to think your head is sticking out into space? It was more likely we were inside where the air couldn’t escape. And, if these people think one shouldn’t have to explain things that are obvious, why were they always telling me the earth was round? What could be more obvious? If it was flat there would always be frontiers beyond which no one had ventured. There were none. If it was a cube there would be corners and edges, but no one had ever found any. It was obvioius to me the earth had to be, at least approximately, round. It’s very strange what some people consider obvious and what they consider not obvious.

I think it’s obvious that you don’t understand which forums are which around here.

That said, welcome. Try not to smoke it all in one night.

It is obvious that you have recently purchased way too much cough syrup.

Calm down a little bit and come back with a question that makes some damned sense.

Odd that you said that. I took me a while of thinking about it before I realized that you seem to think it’s obvious that a flat world would go on forever, whereas when ever I imagine a flat earth I always think of it as finite.

Adults mistakingly believe that things that are ‘obvious’ to them should be obvious to children. Children’s brains are extremely good at taking people at their word.

Lobsang’s Dad; “The earth is round”

Infant Lobsang’s Brain: “Ah like some sort of Disc shape then, like one of dad’s LPs”

But then there would be edges, unless its a Klien bottle. Hey, I didn’t think of that!

You only mentioned ‘flat’ never anything about the shape or where the edges are or even if they exist. Besides, a klein bottle, while not having edges, isn’t flat.

You’re right. Hoisted in my own petard; thinking something was obvious that isn’t.
