What is on your bucket list?

I am interested in hearing what is on your bucket list. What do you want to do that you haven’t done yet? Not talking about the unattainable, but something that you dream about doing.

I discovered my deepest wish was to take my wife to Italy. Oddly enough, I came to the realization while in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. In the midst of all of the other things going on (my survival was very iffy), I realized that my greatest regret was that I might not be able to take that Italy dream trip with her.

Having survived, we toured Northern Italy for 3 weeks 6 months later. We have traveled abroad a lot since then, and it has been wonderful.

Things left on my list…Seeing my grandkids graduate from college, cooking an entire holiday dinner for my family and friends, visit New York and Savannah, and getting a new Toyota Tacoma.

Just felt like SOMEone should respond… I was touched by your Italy story, and I love how your list ended with something as mundane as “Oh, and I gotta get a new truck.”

My serious “Regrets On My Deathbed” list is short: Play with my grandkids. But none of my 30-something kids are in any hurry to help with that. So I guess I could let that go, and die with “No Ragrets”.

Hold a koala; preferably in Australia (preferably with an Australian partner).

My bucket list is, I think, pretty short:

I want to spend a long vacation in Australia (like, a season, not two weeks). I want to go hiking in Tasmania, spend a couple of days exploring Melbourne, drive up to Sydney, see a show at the Sydney Opera House, visit the Zoo that Steve Irwin owned outside of Brisbane, and then head west and explore some various sites in the outback.

I would like to do the same for Scotland. Both my wife and I trace our family back to Scotland, and I would like to go visit and meet some (mostly her) family that still live there. I don’t know if I would like to spend as much time there as I do in Australia, but a trip to London wouldn’t be amiss either.

Perhaps the biggest one: I want to finish my book and get it published. I’ve had wicked writer’s block for a while, so I have no idea if that will ever happen.

Mine is an African Safari trip, to see the big animals. We travel fairly extensively, but over time it seems we end up going to the same safe places. I would like more adventure while I can still physically handle it.

To cross the Pacific on a merchantman.

Just like you can’t really grasp the extent of the US until you’ve driven across it – which I have – you can’t really grasp the extent of the planet until you’ve crossed it largest ocean on its surface.

I can’t say it was a bucket list item, but I got to do this (sort of) in January 2020. In northern NSW, a koala set up camp for almost a week in a gum tree near where we were staying. Mostly he was far above the ground, but one day he descended to the lowest branch, and thus was pettable. (He seemed to regard this as slightly rude, but not deeply offensive.)

Seeing a platypus in the wild definitely was a bucket list item. I was able to cross this off (4 times over) in Benalla VIC, in 2018.

My current bucket list includes flying a glider above the highest point in each of the 50 US states. 18 down / 32 to go.

I had a few things, but my bucket got tipped over.

Mine is to watch a Saturn V launching. It’s something that’s not literally impossible…

Maybe in decades to come they will restore one in the same way old steam engines are restored. Unlikely I know.

I’d like to see Mt Everest in person. I don’t need or want to climb it, but I’d like to camp a couple of days at base camp.

I want to eat sushi in Tokyo.

I’ve had a frankfurter in Frankfurt. I want to have a hamburger in Hamburg.

I want to play the blues with Slash.

I want to smoke a joint with Willie Nelson.

Done: Total Solar Eclipse: 2009, 2017. Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone (in summer), Mt. Rushmore
To Do: Yellowstone National Park (in Winter), Aurora Borealis, Petrified Forest, Cruise around Hawaiian Islands, Visit Bermuda, long railroad trip

Done: England, Paris (twice!), Italy/Tuscany, Germany, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan. A nine day trip down the Grand Canyon. Pyramids in Mexico and Guatemala.

To Do: Ireland, Scotland, more France, much more Italy, Greece, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, New Zealand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Costa Rica, and a lot of countries I haven’t investigated yet. South America and yes I’ll need to narrow that down to a list of countries; it’d be cool to cruise through the Straight of Magellan, and I hate cruises. Pyramids in Egypt.

Also done: Hawaii like 11 times. It’s the only place my ex ever wanted to go for 25 years and why my bucket list to elsewhere is so long. I’m so done with that, though I do miss Hana/Kipahulu.

Mine is skydiving. Wanted to do it since I was a kid.

Still don’t know if I’d have enough nerve, but I got my weight down below the acceptable maximum for the first time in decades, so I no longer have that as an excuse.
