Now that is just wrong. Phil Collins isn’t worthy of being Peter Gabriel’s drummer
I am not a software developer, and I am still confused…
He’s a guy that had some poppy tunes in the 80s. Other than the fact I know he was with them, I don’t associate him with Genesis at all. To me, Phil Collins is and always has been the sound of Genesis.
So many musicians, so little time…
I hear ya, sir (or ma’am?). There are a ton of bands I didn’t listen to at the time that I have, for one reason or another, come back and listened to that have paid huge dividends in terms of musical joy. The Ramones, Big Star, The Allman Brothers, early Metallica (Master! Master!!), Social Distortion, etc.
There are few artists I would say are more worthy of a good listen than Peter Gabriel - especially, as folks have stated, albums III and IV. I would have to add the song “Solsbury Hill” off of PG 1, another all-time fave…
It was an artistic initiative of Peter’s company “Real World Media” that produced “Eve”, and “Ceremony of Innocence”, plus “Noodle” and others that were groundbreaking 10 or so years ago when I first started in the rich media business. They still are quite amazing things.
(Real world produced CD Roms that blended rich music with highly interactive art)
DEAD!
Kidding! Apologies to Stephen Colbert.
uh…whoosh?
There are some songs that, when I sit down and seriously listen to them, move me to tears. Peter Gabriel wrote two of them: Don’t Give Up and Washing of the Water.
I haven’t kept up with him lately, but I was a huge fan back when he became a solo artist. He opened my ears up to a lot of progressive music, something I’ll always be grateful for.
That first tour with Fripp (as “Dusty Roads”) on guitar was just amazing. There was another early tour where he played at San Jose State–in the men’s gym–what a strange venue. There were people wearing some pretty interesting costumes that night.
In a round about way, I suppose I owe my current relationship to Peter Gabriel as well.
I met my girlfriend through a mutual friend at a Barenaked Ladies show in Seattle. Without BNL, we wouldn’t have met and I wouldn’t have moved out to Chicago and started on the career in advertising that I now work in. The Peter Gabriel connection? This is from the BNL Wikipedia article:
So see… w/o Gabriel, BNL would never have happened, and without BNL, my life would be in a completely different (and lamer) place.
Thanks Pete!
Okay - because I have time and because BNL was also mentioned in this thread -
My Peter Gabriel story:
A good, old, close friend is a pro musician - not doing a lot now, but back in the day his band opened for Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent, etc. HUGE Peter Gabriel fan. One of his last bands with a shot at the big time was formed around an Italian guitarist who was also a record producer. Big time stuff - this guy was the top producer in Italy, hung out with Eric Clapton - the whole bit.
So this guitarist was NOT working with his/my friend’s band for a bit and instead producing records, steaming my friend. They were getting close to signing a record deal and my friend needed the guitarist to come to the States to talk with their lawyer. So my buddy calls the guitarist at the studio he was working at - Peter Gabriel’s in Bath, England. A guy picks up the phone and my friend asked for the guitarist. The guy says he is in the studio can he call you back. My friend gets a little snippy and says he is calling from the states about a record deal and the guy freaks a bit, apologizes and runs to get the guitarist. You can see where this is going - the guitarist gets on the phone, my friend tells him the news, and the guitarist says “oh - no wonder Peter said you were so rushed on the phone.” Yep - you guessed it: Peter Gabriel answered the phone and my buddy Mr. Huge Fan treated him like an intern. He never really has lived that one down…
My BNL story:
So I was working for a company that put on big corporate events and BNL were the band coming to play at the Big Sales Meeting for this company - Staples, the office supply store. BNL shows up after doing the NHL All Star game the night before. As they are doing the sound check - amazing version of Message in a Bottle and I was one of 4 in the audience - a mixing board blew. It was going to take an hour to swap out, so the was milling around. Ed Robertson of BNL walks up to me and says “so, I hear there is a product fair that is part of this meeting - can I check it out? I’m a bit of a tech geek.” I say sure and walk him to the next big room in the Convention Center. They different vendors are setting up.
So we talk for a bit - he likes books and graphic novels and stuff and it was cool. As we’re talking, he notices different products - sure, the techie stuff, but also kinda goofy stuff like weird post-it note dispensers and kid’s scissors and the like. He mentions having a young daughter - I offer to get him some stuff but he says no. We hang out for about an hour the board is fixed, they finish the sound check and we’re done.
Cut to the show - they kill - the crowd is really into them. They are about half way through when Ed breaks into one of signature raps, like he does on the song One Week. But then - he starts dropping references to all the products he saw when we were hanging out! He used that time as an opportunity to get ideas for how he would work the crowd for the show he was doing and didn’t tell me - well, frankly because he probably didn’t want some doofus saying “oh cool - can I help?” But it was surreal to hear him talk about the post-it note dispensers and the kids’ scissors and the techie gear. The crowd ate it up - say what you will, but BNL sure earn their money on the Corporate circuit…
Hope you enjoyed…
Is this a cliche? I’ve only ever seen it in “Say Anything”, myself.
For me, he’s one of the guys responsible for “World Music” with WOMAD. And the lucky bastard who got to wrap his arms around KaTie for a whole song.
Oh, and, of course, for Biko. One of those “always makes me cry” songs, for good reason.
OOOOOH! I love a Gabriel Friday Feature. I know what you mean when they over-do it, but you need a large body of work to even get ON the Friday Feature. I imagine the day will come when I’ve never even HEARD of a particular featured artist. And I will shake my cane and tell some kid to get the hell off my lawn.
LOVE that song.
This is really sad
Although Genesis had some good stuff with Phil, with Gabriel was so much better.
They are supposed to be doing a reunion with Gabriel in the near future.
