So, I’m working on an MSDS for my company, and I come across a reference to “sodium dioctyl”. I did Google it, but wound up getting everyone else’s MSDS. Out of curiousity, what is sodium dioctyl and what is it used for? The boss who’s looking over my shoulder’s curious, too.
Sodium dioctyl what? There has to be something on the end; what you’ve got there is like an adjective with no noun. Perhaps the full name is copntinued on the next line?
Well, googling on “sodium dioctyl sufate” turns up only 3 references, all of which incorrectly refer to it as “SDS”. SDS is the abbreviation for the detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate, also called sodium lauryl sulfate. If you have the bottle handy, you can probably look the material up on the manufacturer’s website.
I took a walk back to the lab and looked up Sodioum dioctyl in three separate Chemical Dictionaries, and only found Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate (DSS) as andy_fl had mentioned earlier. The only reference near is was for Sodium Dioctyl Sulfosuccinate, which said to see DSS.
